Conscription, have a pool of highly qualified people to select from, to serve in Parliament for three years. Civic duty based on the principle of "those who seek power are least qualified to wield it."

In general we've become a welfare nation and everyone wants to be a recipient of "special treatment" so are happy to be victim if this achieves that end. That's how the election bribes work. It's financial folly of course. Special people get some money back - sucks to be everyone else.

What gets votes - assistance with deposit for housing, or actually fixing the housing crisis problem? I'd bet the former. The fact that this will actually drive prices up is irrelevent. Politicians don't care and nor do the majority of voters either. Australia's best days are long gone now.

Yeah, career politicians have no idea what it's like to have a real job in the real world.

The Mangy Mutts (politicians) that set the policies are the ones who created both a cost of living and housing crisis. They then beat their chests, play the hero's, in the pretense of doing something about it.

As much as I would like to agree I recognise that in an adversarial system you often are left with a compromise instead of your desired result. Nothing is ever black and white in a closed community comprised of numerous vested interests.

Basically, everyone wants their pounds worth and if you do not accommodate this your efforts will be stymied.


People generally join politics for personal gain...those that do not invariably leave after disillusionment.

The problem is that over the years I've just about lost all respect for politicians (some are better than others, of course), so I hardly expect a good result, and I'd be pleasantly surprised if it happened.....but that doesn't stop me from complaining about the mess we are in.

No problem at all as they are three rungs below used car salesmen and paedophiles on the social ladder.

As a general rule I have found them to be reviled with good reason...with some very few exceptions.

The mainstream political parties are dogshit for sure however thats what the majority voters ever seem to want - we picked them (except us here) so that's what we deserve.

If the voters were more fickle and went overwhelmingly for some of the other parties (except the greens, teals and other commie parties) once in a while that would make the pollies sharpen their game, in theory. I think the risk of minor fuck-ups by novice parties would outweigh the continuous decline we have been undergoing for the longest time now.

The majority of voters deserve more of the blame than the pollies - they are enablers of the failed system. Sure they've bought into the indoctrination but they need to wake up. Ultimately though it'll be the future generations that inherit the outfall of today's poor choices, so I guess we need not be concerned if we are otherwise okay and getting what we want.

The crux of the matter here is that most Australians don't like dealing with politics or politicians....and those left over are idiots.

Only having 2 left wing options has been in place for decades. Politics is about power and pensions. There never was a 3rd option.

It may be true that your politicians are garbage, that your system doesn't really allow or entice decent politicians and that the majority of people are stupid in voting for who they voted for. However, many of you who are on this thread (with a few exceptions such as 35sambar and one or two others) are also of very poor quality. For example, any person who flees the country they are born in to live in a "better country" is a traitor as far as I am concerned (unless their life was threatened or they would be incarcerated for no valid reason). Many of you just sit around doing absolutely nothing and not in any way contributing to your country. Many of you have failed to populate your country, or if you have, had only 2 children thinking you've done your share. When you buy a product, instead of buying something made in your own country (if possible) or an ally's country, you buy the cheapest product, even if made by a "hostile" country. Very few of you would have contributed to your country by active military service during a war or conflict. Virtually none of you would have fought for any of your "rights", even gun rights. Yet you think that just casting a vote for the least worst political party is somehow doing your share.
