MAC, what kind of speed were you launching them at?

Don't remember exactly and my load data book is not where I am. I'm guessing about 2900 or so. All I know for sure is they worked quite well and I would not hesitate to use them again.

Mine came from SPS. I haven’t seen them available recently, but I’d definitely snag some the next time they pop up.

Hi bigswede,

I use, and handload, the 7x57 since 1972.
Any 175 grs bullet will works in the 7 mm Mauser.
Right now I would chose the 175 grs Hornady Interlock or, my favorite, the Nosler Partition.
The NP is, still today, very unique: expands at very low impact velocities, lower than many cup and core standard bullets, but ALWAYS penetrate even at very high impact velocities! Usually leaving a good exit hole!
To me, the NP is still the standard to compare all other expanding big game bullets.
In my Mauser M98, 1935 Mauser-Werke Argentine action with SIG barrel, 60 cm, the standard load with this bullet (and also with the Hornady Interlock) is: Winchester cases, Std or Magnum primers, R22 (or R19) for 2650 f/s. The OAL is very long, 82 mm, because the M98 magazine lenght and the long CIP standard chamber throat. An absolutely safe and very accurate load in my rifle.

Good luck!

Sounds like a great load. I ordered 4 boxes of the Hornady Interlocks, they were on clearance at Midway for $18/ box. I would like to shoot the Nosler Partitions but until I can find them as factory seconds it’s probably not going to happen.

I use the Hornady 175 RN but that’s a nostalgia thing mostly. They work great at the ranges I hunt and a long RN torpedo hanging out of a 7x57 just looks right laugh. Lots of good 7mm hunting bullets available, pick one and go hunt with it.

I would think any of the 175 gr. cup and core bullet would work just from a 7x57, even if one used 7-07 data to load the ammo. If I were to go to a bullet that heavy in my 7x57s, I have three I believe even my hot rodded loads would work just fine. Currently, I run the 150 gr. Nosler Partition right at 2800 FPS and have loaded that bullet to 2880 FPS. Frankly, I think the 160 gr. bullet just might be the best all round bullet for the 7x57 for deer and elk. I mentioned using 7-08 data and if you check it, the 7x57 cartridge case has a greater powder capacity than the 7-08. It's only a few grains difference but it's enough to insure a safe load if you have a modern rifle pr one based on a 98 Mauser. I use a Win. M70FWT, Ruger #1A and a custom Mauser.

I also load for the standard .28 Rem.My rifle is a custom based on an M98 Mauser and has a24" barrel I run the older version of the Speer Grand Slam ay 2910 FPS using a powder no longer available to the public. I just happened to score a good supply just before Winchester dropped it. I did come close to 2900 FPS using IMR 7828Ssc but accuracy while usable , I felt it could be better.

Just a comment on Nosler bullets. Yes, they are a bit expensive. How many shots do you take on a hunt? At least in my rifles, usually the Sierra Pro Hunter used to do the major load work up then once having that done drop back a grain or so and work that up. Once you find a load, use the Sierra for practice, then the Nosler to check sights just prior to the hunt and for the hunt. Used that way, two boxes can last you quite a while.

I do just that with a 270 Win. practice with 150 gr. Game Kings and hunt with the 150 gr. Nosler. I do the same thing running 200 gr. Speer Hot Core for practice and 200 gr. partitions from five different .300 Win. Mag.s A Win. M70 XTR and four Ruger Number ones.

Not a cup & core but for elk I would use the 175gr Partition. I’ve used it on elk-sized kudu at ~150 yards and elk out to 425. It is my absolute go-to in the 7mm diameter and basically the only bullet I’ve used in my 7x57.

Kind of leaning toward the Hornady interlock or the Sierra Gamekings.

Is the Sierra , with the double taper jacket, too stout?

Seriously?

The 175g Partition is a bulldozer that won’t be beat. Seen 6-7 elk killed with them over the years.

These bullets work really well in my CA 7PRC FFT. With factory ammo my short 22-inch barrel will yield 2800-FPS. A bit less the .75-MOA I'm confident this load would work well on most critters.

Here are my results in any of several if my 7x57s (I don't own a .280 Rem):

I don't hunt elk, but I've stuck the Hornady 175-gr Interlock RN in a lot of feral pigs, some really big. They'll plow through a boar's shield, obliterate the heart and lungs, and go out the other side within about 125 yards. I don't push them very hard: about 2365 fps. Weight and sectional density takes care of the rest. Rocky Mountain Reloading occasionally has them (from pulled rounds), and that's about the only way to get them now. I'm going to have a lump in my throat when I run out of the last 250 or so that I have.

If you can find them, the 175-grain Speer Deep Curl bullet behaves about the same way at the same velocity. It's a bonded (plated) bullet, just like the Federal Fusion, only the Fusion is a boat-tail design. I've not loaded the Fusion but, the Deep Curl is death on big pigs and our small Florida deer. I assume the Fusion will replicate the performance.

I've not shot the Sierras, but wouldn't hesitate to do so on our deer. I might think twice about using them on big boars, though, if I'm shooting at distance. I don't like tracking through palmettos.

Finally, the NPT is another bullet that performs as expected, even at modest velocities: through-and-through. The Speer Grand Slam does the same.

There are a few other 175s that I haven't used, like the Interlock Spire Point, but of them all the Deep Curls and RN Interlocks are my favorites. Of course, I had to pick two that are no longer being offered... eek

Just my $.02
