22 LR still legal in Minnesota for small game but it can be dangerous too , i always loved callin and shootin squirrels , my favorite squirrel rifle is a Ruger 77 paddle stock with a magazine and a 4x Leupold scope, i even put a Harris bi-pod on this rifle. gray squirrel is some of the best eating meat there is .
I'm an old Buzzard and things have come full circle for me. I have several squirrel rifles including a CZ452 Silhouette, that shoots lights out, yet the rifle that I reach for these days is my old Remington 514 single shot with iron sights. I created a lot of boyhood memories with this old once shooter back in the late 60s and early 70s. Somewhere around age 18 I got my first scoped rifle, and then the Remington only saw action during rabbit season. I no longer feel the need to kill my limit in tree rats every time out. A couple of squirrels from this year's hatch are all I'm after. Those big old buck squirrels with leathery nuts can die from old age as far as I'm concerned. At 67 years of age, I can still pretty much remember how every nick, scratch and ding on the stock of this 514 got there. It's fun to sit under a tree and think back to a day when a pair of young boy's hands held the rifle laying across my lap. Every scar and wrinkle on the back of the hands now holding this same rifle were hard earned but all of the memories of those youthful days are as fresh as if they happened yesterday, thanks in part to never letting go of the rifle that I used to create those memories! Advise your young ens to hang onto their first guns.......they won't be sorry when they are old!
Good memories. Thanks for sharing
I've said this many times here " an old man told me when I was very young, to not ever sell or trade your guns" Some of the best advice I ever got.
I didn’t need anyone to tell me that. I figured it out on my own. 😁
NRA Life,Endowment,Patron or Benefactor since '72.
Got a Remington 33 single shot....grandma gave it to me around 1965 when grandpa died. As a kid 12-13 years old I would use it to squirrel hunt. Got a date code under the barrel made in Sept 1931 and family used it to kill hogs to feed the family....it is like 94 years old and been well taken care of....down in my garage I got jar lids that I keep and there is one that I shot many years ago....3 holes touching at 73 yards with CCI shorts.
I still own my first rifle, a Ruger 77/22 all weather boat paddle stock. I bought it at 18, I'm 53 now. I have shot thousands of rounds through it. It was never a safe queen a safe queen and it shows, scratches all over it, but the memories it holds...
It's pretty accurate no matter what I feed it. It's one of the few items I own that I have an emotional attachment to...

I’ve made some mistakes, too many to keep around. Right now, I’m refining what’s staying to stuff that actually works. There were certainly some mistakes made by selling good stuff to finance stuff that didn’t work out, but in the end, it’s all just stuff. No sense in keeping things that just take up space.

My first .22 was a 33 as well. It was old when my dad found it at the dump, put Lyman peep and target globe sights on it. He loved to brag about how the sights cost more than the gun (which was free). That thing is a shooter. I've still got it and shoot it now and then. I'll have to find that date code and look up date of manufacture - thanks for that.
Good thread, EKC. I've got a number of firearms that make me feel that way.

Got this Winchester 1300 Ranger when I turned 12. Am 45 now. It is still my go to shotgun. Got a limit of ptarmigan and one sharptail with it yesterday.

Great study in lighting and composition. Made this site of value.
Don't ask me about my military service or heroic acts...most of it is untrue.
I'm 66, certainly in this crowd, have been a squirrel hunter since late 60's. Still have my first Marlin-Glenfield M81? I think, but haven't used it in years. In 77 soon as I went to work, 1st payday got a new Remington Wingmaster, 3rd payday got a new Marlin 39a. That's one I wish i had back. But thru years I've had several, but in 2007 got a CZ 452 American & Weaver RV7, 2009 a CZ 452 Lux 26" barrel, and 2010 a CZ Ultralux 29" barrel. Gave the 26" barreled to my brother couple years ago. But I killed several with the UL last fall-always iron sighted, and a bunch with the scoped one. My UL is my all time favorite baby, when I still had good eyes, but either never fail when I do my part! Nothing like squirrel hunting although I'm big on deer hunting anymore! Grow up squirrel hunting, it usually in you for life, cause nothing better than a good squirrel woods on a cool fall morning Nothing! Still have a Steven's 15a-iron sights and Mossberg 44USb with target rear aperture. Both these are death on squirrels.
