Ak’s WERE more fun to shoot than ar’s because ammo WAS dirt cheap, you didnt have to worry about finding your brass in the grass so you could reload it, and you didnt feel obligated to clean the rifle after a range session…or five.
I do enjoy taking my romanian ak out every now and then (still need to take a deer with it-I tell myself I’m going to every year but either the deer dont cooperate or I grab another rifle) but I dread having to replace the ammo I use at todays prices. This! Ammo used to be around $100/1000. Still have two, still fun but like shooting suppressed ARs better. Saw that someone had a suppressor mount adapter for an AK. . Might have to try that! Yeah, I think I still have about a 1000 rounds of cheap ass Wolf ammo. Matter of fact, the whole reason I bought it instead of an AR was because the AK was cheaper also. I bought a Norinco back in the early '90s when Clinton was trying to ban them. I ought to get that thing out a cycle a few rounds. It's been a while. As far as the short stock goes, I did add a Limb Saver recoil pad that added about 1".

Funny reading the comments. Lots of hate towards the AK but they were a staple in shaping the outcome of wars fought in the past. Been relied on by many of men. I understand the hate towards them but they flat out function reliably and have served their purpose and done it rather well. Just surprised more folks don’t shoot them for recreational purposes. True quantity over quality. I don't find shooting them more fun or easier to maintain than an AR. Ammo has reached the point that fmj costs as much as JSP 223 ammo and JSP 7.62x39 is pricey. There is not one thing I would use an AK for that I wouldn't rather use an AR. If their stated purpose is being relatively reliable and under 100 yard shooters than yes they can attain adequacy.

They were great when both the AK and ammo were so cheap.

Being a southpaw, I like the location of the charging handle also. What else, oh I like the whole 'rock and lock' way of inserting the magazine, and the sound and feel of action when you pull the charging handle back. Then there is the absence of the spring noise you get in an AR upon firing.
Don't get me wrong, I have several ARs, in different calibers from 22lr, 22WMR, 300BO, 7.62x39, and of course 5.56. The AR is my serious defensive rifle/carbine choice.
The AK is something I do enjoy, and it is fun. Mine shoots about 3 moa with cheap ammo.

I like shooting an AK.. but what I like even better is hitting what I shoot at with the first shot...

Many tried to kill me with an AK, but they failed obviously. Never hit me other than one very light graze. Lot of them died because of their stupidity. The AK is junk. Thank you for your service to our country in a very trying time. My Dad tried to volunteer for service in the US Army back in the 60's but was rejected due to failing the hearing test. He was a firearms affectionato from an early age during a time when hearing protection was a sign of weakness. He also usually had an sks kicking about and owned several different models. Much later he finally got an AR rifle in 5.56x45mm, a Windham Arms I recall. As a youngster I only used an sks to chew up larger steel targets. It wasn't a precision rifle. My own experience with "AR" action types, especially the piston version, is that they are very reliable, much more accurate, as mine prints groups 1 MOA at 100 yds, and more way more fun than any sks. I have no use for a 7.62x39mm when the 308 win/7.62x51 Nato is so readily available. exactly opposite of my experiences. SKS were close to MOA rifles. Then I bought a match grand NM ak47. That is still the expenditure of money of a waste That I have ever done. You can't even get it close to MOA. I'd take the 100 buck SKS every single time. But we have ARs so no need to suffer through any more AKs at least and no need for an SKS either.

RickyB- do you have to work to come up with stupid chit to post or does it come natural?
Preciate the brief history lesson on the AK. I'm sure most here never knew that.
FWIW- a [bleep]-ton of people shoot them recreationally. How heavy is the rock you live under?

Some interesting points here Rost. Sadly I never tried a bench rest session with one of Dads old SKS' to find out if it was actually accurate. It was fun to rapid shoot and beat the crap out of silhouette steel targets. This happened during my teenage years, and it wasn't my main Texas cactus brush hunting weapon- a model 70 30-06.

Although its case ejection pattern seems to be more accurate than the bullet impacts and the cases seem to fly probably half as far and hard as the bullets so its a double deal. If I didn't get you with the bullet, I might hit you with the case. Wish I had a few of those more accurate SKS though. But both SKS and AK have horrible sights and triggers. AR15 running the x39 is pretty decent but the mag issue is kind of there and kind of solved. Although there are other rounds that emulate that power curve well enough.
