Most of the posts in this section are about Canadian politics now and not long ago, they were actually about, hunting in Canada....

It's spring bear season in a lot of places. Are bears out in northern Alberta yet?

I get what you're saying. When I mentioned this a few years ago, people said, who are you to say what should be posted here?

I thought that politics was what the top forum was all about. General discussion. I thought the Canada section was for hunting and fishing stuff. The only suggestion I can make is to post Canadian hunting and fishing related stuff here and hope someone answers.

Well, even hunting and fishing is rife with politics in BC. In the Kootenay region, a conscious effort has been made to reduce elk populations, and boy, has it been successful. We have no grizzly bear hunt and really need one. The woods are overrun with ATV's and there are roads into every basin.
We are seeing the first cases of CWD in the area and there seems to be little that can be done. The origin of this, like many prion- based diseases, is still a question.
Having said all this, I can still hike into lakes where I am unlikely to see another soul. I can catch fish for supper and watch grizzly bears, mountain goats, and sheep. I don't have a lot of years left for this but for now, it's still there. GD

That's still great to hear.

Yes, there should be grizzly bear hunting based on the science. If hunting ever opens up again, there will be some awesome bears taken. B.C. has some of the best hunting in North America; it's unfortunate that it's not what it was but compared to the lower 48 or other parts of Canada, there's still some awesome country out there.

Interesting a Canada forum that has been discussing things that greatly affect Canadians ----- how is this off forum topic?

There are forums for all types of hunting as well as for various types of firearms --- one poster is well known for using the Canadian forum as his private sub forum for presentation on firearms vs using one of the appropriate titled firearm forums.

The hunting sub forums have lots of traffic.

To me as long as there is traffic from Canadians on their views I am fine. I can easily visually ignore items not of interest.

Aces, oddly enough, I just noticed that we both have exactly 389 Likes, is that wild or what, and what are the odds???

So I just gave you a Like, so you could be 1 better than me. I would not do that for anyone else!

If in fact, the big choices facing Canadians, history making changes, have some beer beneath the foam? I'd say your forum is being well utilized by discussions of potential life changing events.
Nothing wrong with pictures of dead beasties and fishes, or the always fascinating discussions of the merits of the .303 vs the .280 Ross...but, my cousins, the tectonic plates are shifting beneath you...pay attention, discuss and prioritize...the lives of your children will be changed, one way or t'other.
In any case, the discussion of the outdoors is not prohibited...although, urban Vancouver would wish it so.

Well this is a fine pickle we're in, should'a listened to Joe McCarthy and George Orwell I guess.

flintlocke;
Evening my cyber friend, I trust the day and in fact the entire week behaved and this finds you well.

Was reasonably nice down here today, but appropriately cool for the first load of firewood for 2025 to be cut at about 4500' or so.

Personally I prefer to not have to wear the chainsaw pants when it's too, too toasty out and don't run the big Husky without them on - both as a promise to the family and a nod to the fact I'm not invicible.

Anyways sir, I do appreciate your take on our situation and thought I should say that.

In my view a whole bunch of what's been discussed not only affects our own ability to continue to access the back country, but as well own a firearm - any firearm by the look of things - and then the list goes on from there.

Absolutely it'll have an effect on our children and by extension their children as well.

Again, I appreciate your understanding as we attempt to negotiate these troubled waters.

All the best to you this weekend.

Dwayne

PS;
Watched the new to the neighborhood Billy Rocky Mountain Goat from the yard before I left.

Saw a couple muley bucks down low as we headed up, but otherwise very little wildlife movement, though it was around 9:00AM by the time 3 old guys managed to get it together to head up the mountain.

Looks to be a really healthy crop of California Quail this year, though less Mourning Doves down low.

No turkeys were seen - which was a good thing as I only had a coyote/wolf rifle - .223 RAR in the pickup. It's what's usually on the seat beside me in the XJ or the back seat of the pickup, so today was no exception and there it was.

Two friends have taken Jakes this spring, one up the hill from us and one up in grizzly country a couple hours north - he did see a little grizzly too in the base of the Monashees.

No bears spotted on the firewood run either, which is okay as I don't really feel inclined to ventilate a spring bear if I don't have to, though the appropriate licenses and tags were there and indeed a .223 is legal here for bears. The idiot neighborhood cinnamon bear might have received some Blue Smurf Wonder rounds from a friend this morning, as we heard a couple pops across the gully that surely had that Lightfield Safety Slug sound to the report.

Didn't ask, wasn't informed....

There was talk of fishing, but the water's pretty muddy from runoff in the lower lakes.

That's the hunt/fish report so far this year.

Best once more.

Nice Late season Buck and Awesome Boo!

Surprising how small the body is on the buck with such a nice rack, or is that because of the angle of the photo?

Although we all like to hear your hunting stories, I do enjoy reading about your politics.

I've always had a hard time understanding your political system and political problems. The last year or so has been very enlightening to me by reading your posts on the Canadian Forum. I think that it's good for the US if everything is going well for our northern friends, so that makes me interested. Unfortunately, it looks like your current situation might not be so good. Hopefully Carnie can be swayed by Trump to play along with the trade plan and both of us might prosper.

Makes sense! Very wide rack with a Roman Nose, very nice.

The Boo is fantastic, I'll bet he is hanging on your wall, beautiful!

I got that caribou in the Yukon in 2010. No big hunting story. He popped up with a bunch of others and I shot the biggest. Right place/right time. He scored 412 7/8". B&C min is 375". I was very happy not to get a moose after getting him.

We were forced to hunt here that year. Not much of a view. smile

Evening to you sir, I trust the day in your part of the northern tip of Washington behaved and this finds you well.

Honestly I had to look to see if we've been through Blaine in our travels south and I want to say we got close at least once when we crossed at Sumas, then picked our way onto the west coast and caught Hwy. 11 down to the ferry onto Whidbey Island then Port Townsend and down the coast. Very gorgeous country there and fun to drive in a car with a not terrible suspension, a 40th Anniversary Mustang we had back then.

Truly this isn't a response directly to you per se, but hopefully a wee bit of an explanation as to why some of us are busy contending to keep the way of life we love available to our kids and hopefully grandkids should they want to.

By way of illustration perhaps, I'll share this story of the time I needed to get my Danner Hood Winter Lights resoled and was directed by the factory to an outfit called Quick Cobbler which was then on Denman.

The fellow asked me what I did with the boots and I replied, "Pretty much hunting but sometimes firewood cutting too".

While some folks are reluctant to say they hunt, I'm typically not and have had all manner of responses, but his was positive and then he asked, "What do you hunt?"

I replied it was mostly mule deer, whitetail deer, moose, elk and sometimes black bears, with sheep thrown in if I ever get the LEH draw.

He was enthusiastic and asked where all I hunted and I replied "Oh just on the mountain behind the house mostly".

Very vividly I recall his quick reply, "Shut up!", followed by, "Do you know how long I have to drive to go hunt anything man?"

When I chuckled and added, "I suppose you really don't want me to tell you that when I'm not wearing the Danners, I've got on Double H packer boots because I can saddle up the mare, ride up from the house and chase muleys."

As it turned out, he didn't want to hear that either.

He did do an amazing job on the boots however and I had them on yesterday for the first load of firewood of the spring.

This then is a bit of a photo album of animals that come off the mountain that we can see from the top of our driveway and that I can see the big old Doug Fir tree at the top of the driveway from when I'm up chasing stuff.

There's more, but again those are just the mountain behind the house here where I'm sitting.

It's worth saving or at very least doing everything I'm able to do to try and save, that much I believe with all my being.

All the best.

Dwayne
