Got stoked with how hot it was last night so I got up at 6 and was on the water by 6:30. Beautiful sunrise in the channel. Good pod of porpoises swam but but the fishing… stayed till 11:30

Slow.. Caught about 15 sculpin, give or take 10 flounder/sole and that was it. One fish gave me a good run and popped, felt like a big cod.

Tried running cod bellies and a 3oz jig. Super slow with just sculpin to show for it. Went back to 100g single hook jig and had alot of nibbles from I assume were flounder. Ended up with one hook set a drift over structure but that’s slow slow slow compared to normal.

As for pics. This forum sucks for uploading pics and I don’t take my flip phone in water and it takes horrible pictures anyways. I posted a few pics on asrealasitgets forum. They are basically all pics my wife takes with an iPhone, not that great.

Can probably quit blogging on this thread. Update occasionally if I get more dialed in and maybe if someone’s keen for being a silent sports kook up here it’ll help

Too damned old and chicken, to start that, myself, (the capsizing thing) but I've a couple friends - brothers - from CO deep into that. One just bought a place in SE , primarily for the fishing. After kayak fishing off-shore a bit from a hotel.

Couple years ago they came up fishing, rented kayaks and a drop off out of Seward for a week's fishing/camping down bay..

On checking the kayaks back in, the owner commented on how fishy the boats smelled.

Their reaction?

"Is that a problem?" smile

I was charter-fishing with Robert one time when he foul-hooked a passing porpoise. He got spooled...

That could be fun in a kayak.

You guys have fun!

Got into some black bass this evening as the sauna was getting hot. Quick mission. Plus one for the kayak. I was on the water and hooking fish before I would have even driven to the boat launch.

ND: I power my Garmin Echomap Plus 43CV with a 4.0 AH rechargeable tool lithium battery pack. It powers the depthfinder/chart plotter all day. Maybe not for 24 hour daylight in Alaska. Don't forget boat lights if you fish in spring/fall. Each state is different but fish cops hang out at launch sites at sundown.

Debating about direction on upgrading the the kayak/setup.

If anyone has a dialed setup pm me, keen to find a good mentor to navigate the million choices.

Fished from a kayak off Kodiak 3 different trips in the past. The boat (OK Prowler 15) still lives there. Best fishing was powerboat served, off of Spruce island. DIY out of the Kodiak harbor never really panned out. Too few, too small. I would like to return and try it again, but unfortunately one of the areas I think would be perfect for a kayak , Monashka bay, is closed to rockfish fishing. I'm sure you'll do great out of Chiniak.

I'll also second what Paul Barnard said - take your immersion preparation seriously. I wore a drysuit and had a VHF on a lanyard on my PFD. No EPIRB, but this was a while back, I'd seriously think about one now.

I'll be bringing up a couple maybe three kayaks when I move. A Stealth Duofisha, a Tarpon 160 DH, and probably a touring boat. As cs2blue states - they're the cheapest boats you can own.

I saw a guy in Monashka with a 50 pounder tied to the top of his kayak. Must have been fun.
