I just picked up a 99 chambered in 300 Savage. The serial # shows it was made in 1950, it's in nice shape but unfortunately someone cut the stock and put a ugly looking pad on it. I measured the stock and it measures 15 1/2" without the pad.
I would like some opinions on what looks good on a short stock like what I have.

How does the length of pull feel to you? Fifteen and a half inches seems fairly long. If the cut is flat and the length of pull works for you than an expedient fix might be fitting a plastic butt plate and calling it a day.

I believe 15-1/2" LOP is longer than factory. Maybe just on earlier rifles? How did you measure it?

Be careful; LOP is measured from the center of the trigger to the center of the butt.
Sounds to me like he is talking about just the length of the stock.

I agree Mike. Pretty sure the standard LOP was 13 1/2".

I believe it was originally 13" and moved to 13 1/2" in the '50s. Might have been with the release of the new F. Not home so I can't look it up.

I measured the length of the stock, from were it starts at the reciever to the rear where the pad/plate would be added to the stock.

From where I sit, it doesn't look like they made a straight cut all the way across. It looks like they tried to leave what was in the middle and cut off the two ends of the curve? Can you read any numbers on the butt, under the pad? It looks like there might be a couple numbers, but the pic is dark. They should be the serial number, see if they match the number on the receiver?

I agree with Joe. You could have a stock man fit an EG plate to the butt stock. It wouldn't be the original plate but would look correct.
Two questions: is the rifle D&T'd? Is the receiver ring marked on top or on the left side?

It is not drilled and tapped, and it is marked on top of the ring.

What's the difference between the markings on top or on the side?

"Two questions: is the rifle D&T'd? Is the receiver ring marked on top or on the left side?"
I asked because you have a 1950's EG. History: rifles were not D&T'd so were marked on top of the receiver ring. When the R was re-introduced after WWII it was D&T'd so markings were moved to the left side of the receiver ring. For a short period in the 54xxxx serial range the EG was side marked but not D&T'd but some of those might have been factory D&T'd.
