Would you strap into that steam rocket and jump the Snake River Canyon? I would not, no way, no how.
I think he dumped the parachute early under stress, IMO.

I was there with the Nat. Guard riot control squad. We watched it from about a mile away. Some undersized bolts blew off under the steam pressure and allowed the chute to open early. A LOT early. It opened just as he started to move. He dragged the open chute all the way up the ramp and across the canyon. Even dragging the chute, he cleared the canyon but then the wind drifted him back in. If the chute hadn't opened, he'd have gone another 1/2 mile at least. That thing had some serious power behind it.

Met EK in KC in the early 80's.
Mighta been the same visit where he got popped for solicitin a cop pretendin ta be a hooker.
Nice guy, stood around and shot the shat bout nothin in particular.
He was at arrowhead cause his kid was doin a jump at the monster truck show.
Some handler type guy brought him a traya 4 large stadium beers.
They were gone within a half hour.
Dude had the alky pull, for sure.

The ramp is still there. It's kind of a tourist attraction. People still remember him, even 50 years later.
