Starting velocity, isn't impact velocity. Pointy heads, will never begin to "understand" same. Hint.
Bullets matter wayyyyyyyyy more than headstamps and that simplistic constant,is the 204's undoing. FEW have ever "seen" or "shot" a Good 223 and they are powerless in the refrain,to perpetually prove same, obliviously. Hint.
Just sayin'............... Some day you are feeling really brave, bring that pile of $hit you call guns down here where there are some real varmints and spend a day watching pointy headed people hit $hit you can only dream if…

Here’s a good question for you. What’s the BC of a Chevy pickup?
It isn’t that great, but I’ve hit more game with it than you ever did with your sawed up, rust bucket rifles….

Big Stick... is there a factory .223 load you'd recommend out of a 20" kreiger barrel with a 1 in 9 twist?
With 55 gr varmaggedon, the rifle's test target was a .72 inch three shot group at 100 yards. I haven't shot anything lighter out of it yet.

Is a Ruger No. 1 varmint a silly platform for the .204?

A 9" RPM 223 is a bust,no matter who's barrel. One of many reasons,why I simply cited very few have ever seen,or shot a GOOD 223(1-7"). Hint.
Number Ones are fickle,as are all things wearing a 2pc stock. Hint.

204 won’t do anything a 223 with 40s won’t accomplish. I could not agree more, a 204 Ruger shooting 39-40gr bullets does nothing better than a 223 shooting the same weight bullets. Where the 204 shines is with 32gr bullets at 4000fps+, sure the BC is dismal but is awesome on varmints until the wind picks up then it is time to get out a 223 with heavy bullets and a better BC. will always have a couple 204 Rugers on hand but absolutely not a do it all round for everybody. btw: this is one round that barrel length matters.......you will never see 4000fps with a 22" barrel, so if you want to run one suppressed with a short barrel...don't use something else.

Same deal there with the lighter bullets - a 223 shooter can fire 35 grain Ballistic Tip Lead Frees at over 4000 fps. I hear you on the barrel length - one 204 I loaded for was an LVSF 204 with a 22" barrel and speeds weren't great.

Y’all are welcome to your opinion but I’m telling you, the 40 grain Berger’s and Vmax’s have killed better than they had any right to for me. I’m running a 22” barrel and TAC with them.
I didn’t always like the 204, in fact this is my third try with one. I started out with a Remington 700 and the 32 grain bullets and had way too many get up and run off. Everyone said try the 40 but the Remington would not shoot them. Tried the 39’s and while they were accurate, they did not anchor coyotes. Same thing in the Contender barrel I tried.
After getting rid of them I tried to find the perfect coyote gun that was easy on cats. Kept thinking of the 204. Finally made a trade for this Montana and since I had sold all my 204 stuff, I bought a box of Hornady 40 grain ammo. After it shot good enough I bought a few more boxes and went to killing coyotes. I was impressed, everything I shot dropped in its tracks. Bought some 35 Berger’s to load for cats and they worked okay for coyotes but nothing like the 40’s. Finally settled on 40 grain Berger’s.
I’ve got guns for long range and I like my 223’s for pigs and coyotes but if I had to choose one gun for a calling rifle, it’d be the 204 Montana.

A 17hmr suppressed really is a tremendous amount of fun for varmints!

For me, a 222/223 handloaded loaded with 40 gr bullets is where you need to be for varmint hunting. Everything above and below might be fun, but is really no better.

Neither . I'd buy a .22-250 .
Grumpy old man with a gun.....Do not touch . Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6. Don't bother my monument and I'll leave yours alone.

I've long preferred a Skookum 223 for Utility,over any/all things .473". Hint.
A 21" 1-7" will grant 3400fps,with a .395 BC 62 ELD VT. Hint.
The 204 can't even begin to hang. Hint.

I went with a 26" varmint barrel Ruger No. 1 in .204 Ruger. Will probably buy the Franklin Armory 17 WSM this fall.
Right now I'm trying to find a silver scope to pair with it. Looking through ebay and gbroker at all the old silver Leupolds and Zeiss. For ground squirrels through coyotes, what power/obj mm do you guys recommend? Any other places I should be looking?

Damnit prairie-goat..... that's what the lil fella on my other shoulder keeps sayin. PG is right. You have your bases covered. However, for slightly longer ranges and a very flat trajectory, I'd look at a 22-250 with a fast twist or 22 Creed. However, if you are wanting an AR, just stick with a good 223.. I run 77's in mine and that bullet is a wind bucking animal, in my AR's.. This coming from someone that has played around with the .204 Ruger. I was not impressed with it. The 22-250 spanks it..
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Alessio: THE answer to your question is - Leupold 6.5x20x40m/m variable with Du-Plex reticle. Most of my 204 Ruger heavy barrel Rifles have Leupold 6.5x20x40m/m's on them, two have Nikon 6.5x20's and one has a Leupold 4x12 on it now - but looking for more scope power. Best of luck to you with whichever you choose. Hold into the wind VarmintGuy
