Sensing a recent trend in posts on the main Campfire... I decided to add this: Think back to your final days on high school, whatever year, etc... Did you do anything (troublemaker) that might have caused you to get into serious trouble and NOT be allowed to graduate? Me: Yes. God's honest truth -- I was a rebellious pothead in the late 70's, as most of us were back then. I played electric guitar, 100 watt amps, wall shaking rock 'n roll... I just never made it big, as they say. Anyway, my infamous "claim to fame" came when I brought my electric guitar to school (HS jazz band), but decided to sneak into the main auditorium after lunch period. I quickly assembled a 50' instrument cable from some PA cables, and plugged into my guitar. I went over to the massive 250watt per channel Traynor PA system (5 ft speaker columns on each side of the stage), and cranked the main volume all the way up to "10" (I had my guitar volume knob on "0"). I walked out to center stage... Made an "A" barre chord on my guitar, cranked the volume knob on my guitar full up, and hit a massive, deafening, school foundation shaking, rock guitar chord!!!! It was soooo loud, that it actually popped loose some ceiling tiles from the school's auditorium!! I quickly gathered my wits about me, unplugged everything, shut down everything, and ran out of the auditorum. They *KNEW* who did it.... Oh yeah... They *knew*... Somehow, someway, I was still able to graduate high school, even with them giving me a nasty "evil eye" when handing me my diploma up on stage! LOL... What about you? Did you do anything bad in high school, that might have caused to you get held back or expelled or not even graduate?
It's better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.

Guilty as charged. Ran away from an alcoholic home, made a math 'mistake' on job application and got hired at 17 in a CalFire camp. Joined the army in the winter of '64, but to get the school I wanted, I had to have a HS diploma. The recruiting sergeant, bless him, personally went to my HS reviewed my records and told them, "the kid has 17 credits...state law, give me his diploma now!". The HS caved, printed out a diploma that afternoon. I got my school, which served me the rest of my working career.
Well this is a fine pickle we're in, should'a listened to Joe McCarthy and George Orwell I guess.

I think they gave me a diploma just to get rid of me. Took several years for Uncle Air Force to get me squared away completely.

I quit 4 days before graduation, as I was short of english credit. They said I could go thru the ceremony and get a blank piece of paper and then go to summer school to get the actual diploma. Wasn't an option, as I was already working two jobs and riding bucking horses on weekends.....

I needed to pass a particular class, didn’t know if I did until the diploma arrived.

I was finished my junior year except for 2 senior classes, they split my 2 senior classes up so I used to leave between classes run errands before work afterschool. The school did't like the fact I left campus between classes but I didn't care, so we had a showdown and I won with a little help from my parents. Our school was mostly run by jerks.

Got off the stage at commencement and checked to see if my diploma was signed. It was, No teacher in their right mind would have wished for me another year as a student! RZ.

Spring of 1980, this time of year. We were playing hooky, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Some fishing, some water skiing and sometimes just partying. Coming into the school in the afternoon drunk and hanging out. From 4th grade on the teachers kept telling us that we were the worst class to ever come along, and we worked hard to live up to their expectations.
Then St. Helens erupted and school was out until graduation night. Partied with a couple of teachers, Ms. Raptis could hold her own against any bottle, and our pot was better than theirs.
The sun is hot and the trees are shady, and we're all cool in the class of 80.

I had missed a huge number of days in one particular class and the teacher didn't want to pass me even though I had an "A" average. After a few meetings with principal and head of department, I just had to write a 5 page essay and they'd let me graduate.

In march of 1968, in my senior year, they hauled me into the main office and expelled me. Told me I could finish my senior year and get a diploma by attending night school. They had a long list of all my offenses and a couple suspensions and said I was too much of a disruption and they couldn't run a good school with people like me causing trouble all the time. Maybe they gave up on paddling me as punishment, as it was legal back then. They quit paddling guys a year or two later. I was also a regular in the after school detention class. So after two days they contacted my parents and set up a meeting at the district offices where I had to show up with parents and kiss everyone's behind and promise to be a good boy so they could allow me back into school to finish up the year and graduate. So I got back in, finished up and graduated with a NY State regents diploma. I toned it down the rest of my senior year because I actually wanted to graduate and I was 90% there when I got expelled.

I was gifted as a younger kid with a superb memory. I never needed to study or cram for tests. Never had homework because I always finished it in class or on the bus home. I absolutely loved school. Heck fire they even fed me breakfast and lunch. Growing up dirt floor poor oftentimes at school was the only food I received that day. Anyway I digress, I was a good kid in school, very respectful and courteous.....

Not me, but I taught for 30 years and 15 years later still have ties to local schools. I've seen some crazy things. They used to have very strict dress codes for graduation. Even though it was under the gown. Girls had to wear white dresses. Guys white shirts, a tie and khaki pants. One kid shows up with black pants and they aren't going to let him walk. One of the male teachers who was about the same size swapped pants with the kid so he could walk.
Actual diplomas are not given out at graduation, only an empty folder. Kids get their diploma after the ceremony when they return the rented caps/gowns. Any on stage antics and they don't get the diploma until they have completed disciplinary actions. Usually sentenced to 3 days of helping janitors clean up. Saw that happen a few times.
On the night before graduation 2 kids loaded the bed of a pick-up with chicken poop from a chicken house. They were unloading it in the principal's parking spot late that night when a cop drove by and caught them. He was pretty cool though and just made them load it back in the truck and never officially reported it or they wouldn't have walked. I really liked the idea though.
Most people don't really want the truth.
They just want constant reassurance that what they believe is the truth.

I got suspended last week of school but still graduated. The last month was a joke. Our crew all had enough credits to graduate so it turned out to be a continuous senior day....day after day. A bunch of us got booted so we just iced up some beers and went to the beach.

I was the SRO at our school. I also worked some night shifts. One night we were at a party and we found a bunch of kids drinking. One was an out of town girl and she tested positive for alcohol, but just barely. Like .0002. She was visiting some friends and the friends took her to the party. She was from Cow County Iowa and didn't know how our system worked. Apparently, her friend didn't either. She told me she was going to be the valedictorian of the graduating class. Well, a few days later her paperwork come across my desk and we were just a couple of weeks from graduation.
Typically, the schools only took action after they got the referral from the local Police Department. Since this girl barely tested and she was very apologetic and sincere, I let the referral set on my desk for a couple of weeks when I was 100% sure her class had graduated before I sent it. I don't know if she got to speak at the graduation ceremony, but it wasn't because there was a Police Department referral on the alcohol violation prior to graduation night.

I did, it was an act of mercy by the teachers. Actually I think they could not take another year of me. I was a royal pain in the azz. GW
