I've been wanting a handy 458 Win Mag for use here in Oregon, and have finally gotten it near complete. The gun is an Interarms Mark X, barrel cut to 20" and fitted with an Aimpoint Comp 9000L 4MOA red dot sight, which has held up quite well and is very fast to use. Stock is the factory Butler Creek unit which is doing its job, but might get swapped for a Banser in the near future. ![[Linked Image]](http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a18/oregon45/DSCN3333.jpg)

How are you loading it for elkephants?
Standard 500 gr.loads? Light bullets? Cast lead?
I've been thinking of nearly the same thing in a Ruger 77 using a takeoff Ruger #3 45/70 barrel.

Right now my practice load is a 405gr LSWC over 30gr of 2400 for 1200fps, like a shoulder fired 475m Linebaugh; recoil is neglible.
Mid-range load is a 350gr Hornady FP over RL-7
Heavy load is a 500gr Hornady RN over 63.5gr of RL-7 for 1800fps. I could load more but that's all I want in the recoil department, for now. With time I'll get stronger and can work up. This gun wants to jump over my shoulder and run to the next county with this load.
My hunting load for elk this year will be a 500gr Trophy Bonded Bear Claw at between 1900 and 2000fps. I'll work that load up as soon as I exhaust my supply of Hornadys.

Great looking rifle. Ive had 3 different 458's slip through my hands. 2 were FN Brownings and 1 a Mark X like yours. As you can see, I definately like Mausers

Ever try Barnes Originals. They still make them in some calibers and one of them is 400gr with a BC of .389. That's better than the 30/165TSX. They call it a 45/70 bullet, but hey....

Gakkk!!! I read the title and wondered who would be crazy enough to do this with a Handi-rifle....
BTW, it certainly looks handy.

Hello All Nice rifle would like tto put one together in stainless someday. How does that Aimpoint work do you have to turn it on everytime you need it ( at the rehostat ) or do they make some kind of pressure pad like pistol laser grips have? nelson

The Aimpoint doesn't have a pressure switch, but the battery is rated to last five years so I just turn it on and forget about it. Also, I've shot decent groups up close just by centering the target through the scope tube like a big ghost ring.

Well when things get danger close, it will be to late for them to retreat. Nothing like a 458 to stop things that wont stop. Ever go out to the Four Conors Rod & Gun Club?
No matter how good a rifle looks if it shoots over 1 inch groups its ugly.

I think my phone is tapped or my house is bugged. I was talking with a buddy a little while ago about doing a light and handy 458.

Thats a nice looking set-up Oregon45.I have a handy 458 myself on a Zastava mauser, have thought about selling, but cant quite bring myself to it.Kinda cool to hand it to someone who wants to shoot a big rifle that never has.A couple days ago a friend gave me 4 boxes of Winchester factory (yellow box)ammo 2- 510 gr. soft points and 2 - 500 gr solids, along with 4 boxes of 500 gr. Hornady soft points.Pretty much set up now in the big gun dept. regards, Ken ![[Linked Image]](http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c102/kenster99/HPIM0020.jpg)

Nice Mauser! If I build another 458 it'll be a dedicated iron sights gun.

hey, i like your rifle, but it needs a muzzle brake. you wont believe what it will do with a 350 hornady round nose at 2500, which it will easily do. nothing safe within 300 meters, and dead right now !!

Kenster,
What stock is that on your Mark X? Is that a factory rifle or a rebarrel? I ask because I've got a 300 WM that's about to be reborn as a 458. That's similar to the factory stock on mine. Just wondering if it could actually be hogged out enough for the bigger barrel.
Thanks,
David

Tried the lyman bullet in my 458 ruger #1 and it keyholes at 25 yards passing through the targer sideways. I need one of the old 500 gr round nose molds but have not gotten around to it. The slightly larger non gas check Postell bullet works fine??

I'm building something similar on a Savage. I ordered a 20" stainless barrel. I just got what must have been the last box of brass on the internet, and 100 Hornady 350's. The Lee factory crimp die is backordered at my usual outlets.
I don't know which stock to use. I have a synthetic to use, but I don't know if the barrel channel can be opened enough. If not, I have a laminated stock, that I would need to remove the Monte Carlo face smasher from.
