Didn't Winchester come out with a Big Bore Guide Gun right after Marlin? I seem to remember one, but can't find anything on them.

Yes, I remember reading about them it 450 Marlin. It was called the Timber carbine. 18" barrel, half mag. and pistol grip. I had one in 30-30. Wish Id'a kept it, But am really happy with my Marlin XLR 45-70 that I had cut back to 17" Virgil B.

The "Timber Carbine" is in 444 Marlin it was discontinued and a few years later they offered the "Timber" in 450 Marlin. I have a copy of each. The only difference(other than caliber)is in the sights and safeties. The 444 version wears typical 94 style buckhorn and ramp sites, while the 450 has XS ghost ring sites. The 444 has a crossbolt safety and the 450 has a sliding tang safety.

tp4whlr, Thanks for the clarafacation. The one I had in 30-30 had the crossbolt safety, and ghost ring sights, plus a mount for a "scout" scope over the barrel. So, I guss it was a "timber scout" Virgil B.

What receiver do your guns have? .

I had one in .375, a fine rifle. It had above average wood and finish compared to the standard 94.
Unfortunately, I needed cash to go home on emergency leave and an unscrupulous gun dealer took advantage of a young GI in a bad fix.

Sorry, been tied up with family health issues.
Both of mine use the Big Bore receiver, with the wider hips.

How can you tell the difference between the standard and big bore receiver?

The Big Bores are wider at the rear of the receiver.
