A family ran into this up on Badger last weekend. Sounds like they were rockhounding well off the trail though.

Makes me want to puke.

Back in about 1962 we were up above Yakima, WA in the Ahtanum Ridge country and came upon a stretch of road where the snakes were coming out of a winter den. The road & ditch were covered with snakes for over 150 feet. I was about 6 years old at the time. I had nightmares for a long time over that.

Dad tried skidding on a snake to kill it as he wanted a skin. We were in a Volkswagen bus. When he opened the door, which sits on top of the front wheel, the snake was pinned by the tail and was thrashing all over the place. Dad slammed the door & we got the hell out of there. As I recall, mom was pretty pissed at dad.

where's all the Pentecostal folk? (grin)

(jk, no offense intended to folks that worship in that manner)

I'd have been lighter going home, I don't see how I could let that target of opportunity pass me by without expending some ammo.

man that's a bucket of snakes, tks for showing us David, now go kill em (grin)

You can't beat them, so you may as well get used to them...they are so fast nobody can outrun them! Just over a week ago they were photographed in the Gas Hills near Riverton, Wyoming, and now they're all the way up here in Washington! Amazing little critters aren't they?
Go to General Big Game, SU35's article (with pictures) about his bear hunt in Idaho's Hells Canyon...and there they are! I had no idea they covered so much ground! grin

I lived in the Columbia Basin and have been all over the Potholes both on Foot and on Horseback and have never come across a snake venomous or non venomous, but that's not to say they're not there. I've just been lucky I guess.

We killed one at O'Sullivan Dam Resort,(WA Potholes), that wasn't much over a foot long and one at Mattawa about 2 Ft. long. Killed one in my back yard here about 10 years ago that was about 3-1/2 ft long. I see bull snakes over 6ft long kinda frequently but when it comes to rattlers, that's why those first two .45C rounds are #8 shot.

We're developing pretty fast here and I hear about rattlers but don't see them. That's good because whatever shows up that scares or bothers the neighbors, they call me to help.
