What do you think?

Looking at one for general camping and elk hunting from the jeep.

I was also looking at the Big Horn and almost purchased it from Cabelas, but there was something about canvas that seemed to spark interest, maybey it was the traditional aspect of it.

FYI, but I'd suggest you watch the setup video for the Bighorn II and the Alaknak. IMO, that'll make the choice more clear...

David,
I have an alaknak and a cabelas story:
I recently purchased a delux vestibule for the alaknak. I took it on a spring turkey hunt a couple of weeks ago. I ran into some pretty strong winds one night, so strong that the pole on the vestibule bent in half, and the vestibule is now unusable.

I gave cabelas a call. They laughed when I asked for a replacement pole - I figured they should replace it since they advertise it as a 4 season tent - clearly it is not! I then asked if i could purchase a replacement pole. They politely told me to screw myself, and gave me an 800# to some other company. (Cabelas doesn't even sell replacement poles to their own tents)

If I were you, I'd purchase a tent from a company that will stand behind their product. I know I won't go near cabelas ever again!

Thanks for hearing my rant.

If you are going to camp in cold weather then canvas makes a big difference. Canvas breathes which allows moisture to escape. Any synthetic tent is going to rain on you from the condensation collecting inside.

I'd look at the Kodiak from Reliable Tent and Tipi. https://www.reliabletent.com/index.cfm?page=detail&Product_ID=223&CATID=9
The XL-Tex fly should be set up so there is a gap/airspace between it and the tent.

Another option would be a 15'x15'x5'wall Sunforger spike tent from the Wall Tent Shop.

IMO, the Alaknak looks much easier. You can get the same thing in a canvas/relite mix from Montana Canvas as well...

If you ever plan on camping in an area with any kind of wind, don't buy a Big Horn II. Spent two nights on a four day antelope hunt in one and the noise from the tent flapping in the wind was like sleeping in a potato chip bag! The next two nights were spent in the back of the Suburban. Canvas is the only way to go, IMHO.

Here's a link to some pretty good deals on a couple scratch and dent wall tents. If I'm not mistaken, shipping is included in the price, but poles are not.

Cabelas will take anything back no questions, just return it.

David, rather than fart around with cheap imported tents, why not buy a quality tent made here in the PNW?

Here's a model that's similar to the Cabelas hybrids, but made in Oregon, buy folks who actually use their products:

I have this EE tent and it is easy to set up warm and ventitlates well. We used last year in EO and we had snow , hail rain and cold temps we were able to keep it warm with propane but you could add a stove. We wanted a light weight easy to move tent and this is it a good choice 222rem and it is not any more expensive than cabelas and maybe cheaper. This tent only weighs around 35 lbs if you pm me with your e-mail I can send photos don't know how to post them here yet???

I have two Eena TTs. I don't use their pole kit. In fact they recommend something stouter if you're leaving the tent up for very long.

One day I set mine up to dry in the sun using the pole kit and a gust of wind snapped the pole. I called them and before I was done talking they asked me what my address was. They sent a replacement pole free, including paying for the shipping.

I love my newer TT that has the sunforger top.
