Are any of you people working with the two groove Springfield barrel? I'm going to rebarrel to one; I've got 311299 and 311335 to work with. Just curious. thanks

Modoc Mike, Springfield two-groove barrels have a great reputation for accuracy with cast bullets. I forget if they prefer bore-riding noses or Loverin type bullets. I'll try to find out and get back to you. My Springfield is a four-groove and shoots very well with bore riders, including the Lyman 314299. curmudgeon

Modoc Mike, (with that handle you must be a fellow prunepicker). Sorry it took so long to get back to you but I had to pick the brains of others, especially the most knowledgeable caster I know. The theory is that two groove barrels shoot best with bullets with bore riding noses because with so much of the barrel being lands there is a lot for the nose to ride on. In the real world four groove Springfields shoot bore riders very well, too. The Loverin type bullet (short nose, all of the rest groove diameter, multiple grease grooves) may be better for highest velocity loads. In the normal range of cast bullet loads ( 1500-1800 fps) there are a lot of very happy Springfield shooters with both styles of barrel. Hope this helps, curmudgeon

MM, I see that you have 311299. I have a 314299 (same bullet). That is a very accurate bullet for me in a four groove Springfield when sized .310" and in a No. 4 .303 Lee Enfield when sized .314". curmudgeon

The 30-06 I shoot cast bullets with is a low Number 03 with a two groove replacement barrell. I use a Williams peep with standard Military front sight I shoot 200 gr cast bullets with GC (I bought them years ago and can't get any more. they have one lube groove and shoot great.) I also shoot 150 gr LEE bullets with GC using Lee Liquid Alox. They shoot great in that 2 groove as well as in my 30-30 win. I can't get any accuracy out of either of my Marlins though. I guess it's because of the Micro Groove, I dunno.
ARMJR
