O.K...
i would like opinions on what your version of an all arounder in 338 would entail.

action?
finish?
stock?
sights?
finish?

etc, etc...

i want to put together another 338 winnie, and want to hear from you guys how you might build one, so as to be able to possibly build this the best i can.

thanks!

Here is an "inexpensive" one and just plain works. It shoots every bit as good as my semi-customs and is ready for any weather. If I was starting from scratch, the end product would look exactly the same.

REM 700 BDL/SS (original barrel) bedded into a Remington mountain rifle LSS stock with Leupy DD mounts and a Leupy 2.5-8. It's 9lbs even, all up and ready to hunt with sling and cartridges. It shoots RL19 or IMR 4350 with 225gr Nosler Partitions to nice little groups. When the barrel dies, I'll rebarrel with the same contour too.

Rem 700 CM action
Lilja #4 finished at 24"
McMillan Classic McSwirly
Williams bottom metal
Talleys holding a Leupy 3-9 with "Dober Dotz"

rough guess 8 1/4 lbs or so, maybe a bit more.

That'd float my stick, I'm thinking.

I recently finished a build on a M70 SS classic in 338wm, here are the details:
- the M70 classic action was trued
- Pacnor SS supermatch grade barrel, fluted in a #4 contour, 26" barrel
- Williams extractor
- Williams obendorf style bottom metal
- McMillan, Model 70 Hunting

Good build, pretty happy with the rifle, but there are a few things I would do differently. I got some good advice on this build, a lot of it from this site - some I followed and some I did not.

Hindsite being what it is here is what I would change:

Pacnor #3 contour SS supermatch grade barrel, unfluted, at 24". The fluting, for a rifle that gets packed around all day, is a pita. When I come back in I generally wipe my rifles down and this fluting is bit$h to keep clean.

Fluting issues - never thought of that. Good 20/20 to pass along. Thanks.

All-around means all-weather.. M70 classic action in SS, SS barrel - maker of your choice (PacNor's quite good and reasonable) #3, cut to 24" or less. All bead-blasted.

Synthetic stock or possibly one of the laminates.. They can withstand most weather related issues.. The choice there can depend on final weight. No sights.. LW Talleys on top with Leupold 1.5X6 VX-III.. Williams bottom metal and extractor, polished feed ramp and rails, trigger job, safety tweak, glass bed..

Git R done...

My .338 is a Chilean Mauser action: Obermyer barrel; Blackburn box and trigger; has all the bells and whistles..It is a Jack Hogue Custom with a French walnut stock, I bought the gun used many years ago for a pitence and todays its a little worn from hunting but still worht a bloody fortune...

It shoots 1/2 inch with some loads and an inch with any load..It shoots all loads to the same POI, and I have not touched an adustment in 15 years..How many can do this, its the only one I have seen in 74 years.... How could I ever sell it at any price.

I'm just completing mine now. It has the following:

M70 SS classic.

Tuned trigger, lugs squared, throat and rails polished .

Douglas #3 airgauge barrel cut to 22.75 (because I could!)
Action and barrel are bead blasted.

The bolt shroud and extractor are polished bright, the bolt itself is jeweled with a 3/16 tool. Then every other row on the jewelling is done clockwise then counter clockwise. This gives a really cool look. Think I'll polish the trigger to match the extractor and shroud next.

Talley one piece scope rings with a leupold VXIII 2.5-8 BC reticle.

Lastly is a McMillan Edge Supergrade stock, that I just bought on this forum.

I'd go with the following:

M700 action
4 weight Schneider cut to 23"
Jewell trigger
For a handle I'd either do a Ti take off or a Edge
Talleys
6x36 Leo with LR dotz in it
Uncle Mikes Mtn sling

Add 200 NBT's and or 210 TSX's or Nozlers and go for and fill up an ark!

[Linked Image]
Stainless Ruger M77 MkII in .338 Win Mag. Ruger factory walnut stock that has been reshaped and slimmed down. Stock refinished with 47 hand rubbed coats of oil. Checkering hand cut. Barrel diameter has been slightly reduced using draw files. Action, barrel, and bottom metal have been vapor honed. Bolt and extractor jeweled, Neidner pistol grip cap, African ebony fore end cap, Timney trigger, Mauser cross bolt. Action glass bedded. Lugs lapped. Action polished. Extractor tuned. With scope, it weighs 8.75 pounds. (The scope is a Leupold Vari-X III 2.5-8x)

Cheers!

:)B-nice looking rifle, 47 coats, someone has time and patience...grins

So it sounds like it would be a bit over 9 lbs all up (with sling and rounds)?

Thx for sharing

I've never weighed it with a loaded magazine and a sling but right at 9 pounds or so would be my guess.

Cheers!
