Maybe it's just me, but I always thought the Mod 70 was one of the last rifles you had to buy an after-market trigger for. I have 3. I like Jewel & Timney & have thier upgrades on some guns that were in bad need of trigger improvement.

Do the mdl 70 jewell triggers require more fitting/gunsmithing than the drop in remington jewells and timneys?

It must be you Model 70's all have horrible factory trigger's, in fact it is the first thing I do before I fire a shot.

p.s. after posting this I remembered that I have brand new in the box model 70 ,tried my trigger pull gauge on it 5 times and it read between 98oz and 112oz that is HORRIBLE in my book.

I don't pretend to be the expert but I have worked, adjusted & replaced a fair amount of triggers. The Mod 70 easily adjusts to whatever the hunter or varmint shooters could ask for, IMHO. Maybe I'm not fussy enough.

I agree, all the model 70's I have had it was really easy to get a super chrisp no creep trigger out of. Most of the time its a 3 dollar spring change.

LMAO.. Try the same gauge on any Ruger or Browning and see what you get.. Lawyer triggers from the factory are nearly all over 5-6 pounds.. I've had a few of the two mentioned above max out the scale at over 12#!!

The M70 trigger is IMHO the best setup from any manufacturer, and nearly foolproof..

None of my Model 70s ever needed an aftermarket trigger. A properly tuned factory trigger is about as good as it gets IMO.

Can you be more specific about the $3 spring? Where did you get it?

I messed with mine a much as I am comfortable. Maybe a new spring is just the ticket.

Thanks,
dt

A model 70 trigger, even when reworked by a quality smith isnt even in the same league as a Jewell.
The only problem is the Jewell in theory is more prone to being fouled by dirt, ice, grease, etc.

DT,

I have my smith do them but it always cost 30 in labor and 3 in parts smile

While for the most part this is true for a hunting rifle vs. say varmint, I had a late example M70 that the tolerances where so crappy that an aftermarket was the way to go. I went with a Rifle Basix and think highly of it. Chris, of LSR who did the work, prefer it over the Jewell's for most applications.

For M700's anyways, the Jewell is awesome when set quite light (2 lbs or less), so if that's what you want you'll love it!

I really can't think of a good reason to replace a M70 trigger with a Jewel, unless you want to make a target or strictly varmint gun out of it. And IMHO a 2 pound pull on a big game rifle is not a really good idea.

Bob, I agree... it was a backdoor way of trying to say that IF a person wants to run a trigger that light, the Jewell rocks.. but as I've said before ad nauseum, I don't like the Jewell up above 2.5, 3 lbs...

That's on a M700. I don't know if the M70 version behaves the same.

Where do you set your triggers, Bob? I've kind of settled on about 2.5 lbs. That extra half-pound makes all the difference <g>.

Generally, Jeff I keep them at about 3.5;one M70 in 375 breaks about 4;I don't want them too light as I hunt cold weather and too light a trigger can be an issue with gloves etc.M70's should have a hair of overtravel to keep them mechanically reliable.Had to fix one for a guide in Alberta because whoever adjusted his got carried away and took too much overtravel out of the system.

With a varmint rifle go as light as makes you comfy and safe,I say! This to me is where a unit like a Jewel really shines. But I have never had a squawk with a good tuned Remington 700 trigger.Another very good one is the Blackburn for Mausers.
