I've been very impressed by the 44 special out of a 6.5" Smith and Wesson; 250gr Keith bullet at 800fps.

i use a 30-06, and only a 30-06. bang! flop. never even notice the recoil unless i shoot a lot at the range.

Quite a few fit the bill, but my favorites are:
.25-06, .257 Roberts, .257 WBY, .260 Rem., .280 Rem., and the .375 H&H. The .375 certainly kicks, but recoil is pretty mild considering its lethality on the big stuff. I also find that the .270 WSM kills 'em pretty dramatically with moderate recoil.

MarkG, Do you know what your muzzle velocity is with 90 grs of 777 and 300 gr XTP is. Mine shoots 80grs of 777 and the same bullet great. Just want to know mv. Also; how does that bullet work on deer? Thanks, Luke

I shot a 30 TC today on an Encore frame with a 2/" barrel and muzzle break.
This rifle is light and kicks less than a 243 with a 150g bullet that I chronographed at 3150 fps.
The 30 TC case is new and is about 3/16 longer than the 6.5x47 Lapua case...tiny for the speed that you get out of it.

My experience is to answer the question in reverse of the order that it was asked. About anything with the moniker "magnum" is a pain in the shoulder, neck and ears that just isn't necessary. It took years for me to figure out that a dollar-a-piece bullets at 3000 fps don't kill game any faster, or deader than .23 cent bullets at a modest reduction of velocity. I would use the big power, premium bullets only on dangerous game.
Once I finally wised up, I have become enamored with the .308 family of cartridges, with the 7mm-08 being my favorite. 100 grain bullets up to 3300 fps or 175 grainers at 2600 fps and any combination in between, will do the job, at minimal recoil. Staying with the .308 family and keeping recoil to a minimum while wanting a bear stopper, the .358 Win is my choice.
No more magnums for this guy.
Jeff
