I am a Savage 99 junkie, but I couln't pass up a deal on a 336SC in 32 Win. special. I know its not a popular caliber ,but the gun is about 95% and I think it looks cool. Can anyone tell me some facts or history on this gun. Thanks, Mark.

Doug Murray of Savage 99 fame also wrote a book on the Marlin 336 and Winchester 88.

According to Doug's book, the 336SC was chambered in 32 WS from 1948 until 1960. If you give me the serial number alpha prefix, I'll tell you what year it was made.

I once had a minty Deluxe SC in the 32 WS that I wish that still had. It was the prettiest 336 that I've ever seen.

An "R" prefix would make it a 1958 production rifle. I think that $150 for any 336 in better than 90% condition is a good buy and the fact that I love the Sporting Carbine configuration would make it even better for me.

Your rifle is the 2nd style of 336SC and should have the following attributes:

1. 20" barrel with Micro-Groove rifling.
2. Pistol grip cap with white line spacer and white line spacer under the buttplate.
3. Was not d&t at the factory for a top mount scope.

If you find a 336 SC in 35 in the same condition and for the same price, I'll buy it from you.

According to Murray, Marlin didn't d&t the 336 for top mount scopes until 1960. Prior to 1960, the only factory d&t holes were the 2 on the left side of the receiver for Lyman/Redfield/Williams peep sights.

I have spoken to Doug a few times, when guns didn't line up with his book. He admitted that the book is a guide and not the final word, but it is, in general, a very good guide.

Gents,
If you want to really research ur Marlins, spring for the Brophy book, "Marlin Firearms", it's encyclopaedic and has more information on them than ANY other source. Check out Amazon.com, it's still in print. Not cheap at ~$60, but I guarantee you won't regret it!
Cheers,
