I am possibly going to have to retire due to complications of Diabetes and heart condition, Doctor is looking at things, work is getting very stressfull and my health is not handling the stress too well. Social security will pay some and there is state retirement plus some other retirements from a couple Unions if they haven't robbed me of it, getting kind of synical about unions. Anyway just wondering?

My wife is on permanent disability because her stomach does not work. She had private disability insurance and social security. This gives her about 2/3s her previouse income, but she has to pay for her own medical insurance now.

Bullwnkl,

I am maybe loking at the same situation, seems like the body is falling apart. I have talked to a few that have had to retire early but these are RR workers and it would be different than what you are facing. I understand that if the doctor decides to retire you on disability then SS or RR Retirement will review the claim and decide from there. This taking up to a year and maybe going to doctors of their choice. If they decide to put you off on a disabilty then Medicare will pick up your insurance and you only have to pay for the supplemntal, part "B" I think they call it. Part "B" is only offered once in so many days and you need to take it then if not the next time it is offered then the cost is quite a bit more. I have seen several guy's go out early and there health go on down hill and others appear to get better to a degree. I myself would like to enjoy my retirement some before becoming home fast. But I guess we all are destined to that to a degree. Don't take what I posted here as the gospel, this is only what I hear from others that have done this. You might want to go to the SS office and pick up info on it or get an interview with one of the workers there.

If your Doctor can present a good case it should be no problem. What is required for SS is you can no longer do yournormal occupation and its duties any longer. Social Security often refuses the first claim, you just have to be persistant with them. In FL the state employees retiremant fund runs the daiability fund for LE, Fire and EMS which is high risk, as well as all state employees. They were no problem, between the two ( I had a heart attack on the job, open heart surgery and several angioplastis) I draw a little over half what I was earning! But still have state health benefitIt stinks, but beats heck out of working yourself into an early grave.

My wife still works, she is a public health nurse and likes it, and with that we keep the house and eat regular. No high rolling but we do all right.

I went the full route of appeals for SS, with a messed up back
If you can make something like $500 per month, they won't give it to you. I was getting full dissablility from the company (2/3 my wage) that would quit after two yrs unless I got full dissability from SS. Then I found out my retirement pension from the company would be based on the 2/3 pay instead of my full pay and even though I was still an employee, the yr's I was on dissability were not counted as yrs in service for my pension plan .
I sucked it up, kept on with pain pills and went back to work for a few yrs until I was 60 and pulled the plug.

I am on disability retirement. My company furnished a disability income until age 65. This was the retirement age and since I was on disability the company pay quit. I had a good rate with medicare and have received it all along.
The problem with the company disability they guaranteed 1/2 regularly pay. They only paid the difference between medicare and the 1/2 pay. When you were used to about 20 hours overtime that 1/2 regular pay hurt.
It would be impossible without medicare and that of course requires social security disability if you are under 65.

Take care of yourself. We Ory-gun boys don't want to have to come up there and do all the Whack-in, Stack-in and Pack-in for ya !!

Silver Dude, I'm ok if I move slow and avoid the steep stuff like more than ten stairs in a single bound, I wish, I been hiding this crap for about three years, not telling any one. Yesterday I went to see the quack er now former quack, he had me on the same meds for the past six years one of which i should have not taken for more than a few months another that should have been evaluated and raised from 5mg to 20 mg a long time ago. You gotta love then HMO's. So today i get a call from the former quack wanting to set me up for all sorts of testing, I am going to let the new quack have a shot at all my ailments and perhaps a lawyer at the former quack just out of onryness. I don't really think i will retire the HMO would rather see folks die before they sign off retirement, at least that is what happened to a couple friends. But on the cheery side it didn't rain today and then Black butte porters are aging quite nicley. this year you need to bring your fishing gear to the river. No excuses like helping Spike mow his lawn or what ever. Now how did i lose them porters to you?

Eddieleon, I am a county drone, i work behind a desk and a counter standing long hours staring at a screen.....why am I here ? I hate these screen things, except to get on the campfire and other usefull stuff. Any way i am just in the beginning stages of this nightmare. I have worked a long time at variouse jobs but none has ever been this stressfull for me. I just don't get it. i would like to slow down but can't in this job, so my condition gets worse just not sure what to do.
I need to find out out about the coverage offered by AFSCME the union I belong to. A friend who was LE went out with the same problems just not as severe and is doing ok at 80% wages. But here in the peoples republic of Washington st we have 3 different plans I am in the middle one, If I were PERS 1 they would be trying to buy me out but PERS 2 is not as good and PERS 3 for the new hires well you might as well go on welfair or die because there is nothing there. What a nightmare. Better quit venting before i have the big one <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

As a fellow who just attended my first retirement seminar for the military...

What can the VA do for you?

There are benefits even if your disabality equalled 0% according to the VA.
