What does it read on the side of the barrel, as to caliber????

If it reads ".280 Rem.," or "7MM Rem. Express," either is the same cartridge, and either will chamber and fire.

Do NOT try and shoot 7MM Mauser or 7MM Rem. MAGNUM in that rifle!!

.280 Rem., or 7MM Rem. Express only!!

Check the marking on the barrel carefully. There are a butt-load of 7MMs out there. Briefly, in the late '70s or early '80s Remington, in a move to try to gin up a little excitement (sales) of the .280 renamed it 7MM Express Remington. It was quickly changed back to .280 because some people are not savvy enough to tell an Express from a Magnum. I have never heard of a 742 chambered for a 7 Rem Mag (or any other belted magnum, but I could be wrong).

The only 7mm caliber it was chambered for from the factory was the 280 Remington.

HANDYMAN, NO THEY DID NOT SIR. If it says 7MM it is the Remington Express load, in other words the .280.

I'd say it was a trifle hard to get a 7mm rem mag into the magazine or the chamber of a 742. (thank goodness.)

Anywhich, the 742 was chambered in .280, aka 7mm Express, and that is all as far as a 7mm cartridge is concerned.

welcome to the campfire handyman.

when you type in all caps, it's like you're yelling at us. just letting you know. some folks have different styles....

welcome again, and don't pull the trigger on any mag cartridges in that woodsmaster. if tlee tells you something about guns or cartridges, he's probably right. i think he was around when they developed the .30-06...

cool

be nice to him for a while, steelhead. he's new here yet...

MODEL 742 "WOODSMASTER" - 6mm Rem. (mfg. 1963), .243 Win. (mfg. 1968), .280 Rem. (marked 7mm Express 1979-1980), .30-06, or .308 Win. cal., 22 in. barrel, open sights, 4 shot box mag., gas operated, checkered pistol grip stock. Mfg. 1960-80.

Now you know what the options are, if you need it, use a magnifying glass and find the caliber designation on the left side of the barrel to make sure.

Be careful and DO NOT mix up calibers or try to fire improper calibers in ANY firearm. It WILL blow up in your face if not fired in the specific chambering stamped on the barrel.
