What is involved in converting a Remington 700 bolt/ action /receiver from .223 to .308? thanks

The easy part, buy a new magazine box and follower.
The hard part, have the existing bolt modified or buy a new/used bolt with the correct size bolt face.
Unless you are married to that action, it is probably easier and cheaper to trade your 223 for a like rifle in 308.

Sell the .223, and buy a .308. Cost effective, more timely that having a smith do the work, and better odds of everything working fine.
Or, you could just buy a .308 for what it would cost to have a gunsmith do the conversion.

after you've had the bolt face modified and acquired a new mag box with the proper follower,spring and spacer you would still have to machine the feed rails in the receiver.....sell it and by one in a 308 based cartridge....

Looking at a 17 Rem and a 243 side by side I see no difference in the rails and my mike doesn't either. The follower holds the cartridge against the rail, whereever it is...

Find out what the cheapest Remington 700 with that bolt face will cost you. Then go to your gunsmith and ask him how much it will cost to do the conversion. I have a feeling that he will tell you to just get the new (to you) Remington and start from there.
When you get the Remington you can always sell the stock and barrel which will lower the overall cost.

It wouldn't be that hard to do with the right fixture, but would require a Sako extractor. Any custom smith could do the work. The feed rails should work and all you would have to do is replace the box and follower. Like the others stated, it would be much cheaper to trade for the proper bolt .
