Does anyone use Longshot in the following rounds?

9mm
.40 S&W
10mm
.45 ACP
.38Spl +P
and .357 Mangle-um?

If so, how well do you like that powder? Are you getting the velocities you want? Are you happy with its accuracy?

Thank you ahead of time. grin

I don't use Longshot for any of the rounds you have listed. I do use it for the 460 Rowland and it works great out of my 1911 Kimber Stainless Classic. It gives me the listed velocity and good accuracy.

Here's a 25 yard group I shot when I first got the "kit" and loaded some rounds. It should be good out to 100 yards or so. I've not done much with it. The spring it uses is tough to compress and a little dangerous to get in. I figure on picking up another 45 ACP 1911 and setting the Kimber up for the Rowland permanently over the next year.

Thanks RD. I know that the Rowland is a helluva stout round! And nice group, BTW. grin

I don't shoot a M1911, or I'm sure I'd be tempted to try the .460. What size of bullet are you able to use? What velocity are you getting?

I like Hodgdon's HS-6, but that's an obsolete powder quickly being overtaken by Longshot, which seems to give good velocities at more reasonable pressures than HS-6, in shotshells too.

I've tried both the 185 and the 230 Golden Saber in the Rowland. So far I've only used Longshot for my powder. Actually the target shown was the stoutest recommended load for the 185 at 1475 fps, but I have a little more faith in the 230's at 1330 fps and they shoot good, too. Velocity's have been chrono'ed and come really close to matching the listed velocity.

Interesting you should mention HS6. I have an unused can of that and have never found any data that would suggest what it's appropriate for, so it just gathers dust.

I use longshot powder in the 38SPL+P with the 125 gr Hornady XTP.

I loaded .02 below MAX, accuracy is excellent but I did not chrono the loads.

I also use longshot powder in the 44 mag with a 250gr hard-cast Keith bullet.

Thanks Doc and Rick. That +P .38 load with a 125grainer is a load I noticed off of the Hodgdon site, and from a 4" bbl they claim that bullet will do @1228 fps, which when factored into kineticE should generate more than 400 foot-pounds at the muzzle! Making that .38Spl load something really efective!

I like God Dots and would try subbing that bullet for the Hornady.

Stubb,

I really liked Longshot in the 38 + and 357 Maggot. I used it with 140 to 180 grainers, and it worked great. It will do about like Blue Dot for heavy loads, but won't do what BD does when leaned on.

FWIW its my 12ga. powder and have used it in 44 Mag and 45 Colt as well. You'll like it, just follow Hodgdon's data...

Thanks Hawk. I'm more of a .45C fan (and ACP) than I am any kind of a .44 fan.

What kind of loads have you 'made' in .45Colt? & between the .44M and .45C, which one do you like the most? Thanks!

I have used 11 grs and a 300gr. LBT in 45 Colt for just over 1,000 fps. Hodgdon had one annual manual (Ruger, T/C) that had a 12 gr. Max with a 300gr. bullet. It hasn't been in the last two.

Reading so much Elmer Kieth made me a 44 fan; I USE the 45 Colt far more. Most of my hunting is with hardcast and the 45 just simply does it all with more of everything.

You can almost take any 240 44 load and use close to the same powder charge in a 45 Colt with a 300gr bullet (in recommended guns of course) with similar penetration qualities, speed and a larger frontal area.

The old Colt works better at the traditional milder levels too; and kills even better with modern cast bullets than it did 125+ years ago..

Nate
