Okay, I did a bonehead newbie thing and tried to disassemble my pre-64 Model 70 bolt with the safety in the fire position. Haven't played with a Mauser in a while.

Help!

How do I get this thing apart now and back together without messing something up? Also, I am switching out a post-war shroud and safety for a pre-war shroud and paddle safety as my rifle is a 1938 pre-war. The pre-war paddle safety appears to just be a two position safety...

Any help appreciated!

Okay, got the pesky safety back in the intermediate position, and removed the striker assembly from the bolt.

Now I just have to remove the three position shroud/safety assembly, and replace with the pre-war assembly.

You should be able to hook the cocking piece over the hard edge of a board and pull the firing pin back enough to rotate it to the cocked position. It is not easy and will take some effort, but it can be done.

Put the safety on when cocked and have at it the old same way...

It's still giving me a fit. I don't remember a Mauser ever giving me this much trouble...

I have my block of wood out and have tried compressing the spring tension to remove the cocking piece, but can't seem to get it far enough back for turning and removal.

The safety is in the middle position, as on a Mauser for this stage of disassembly...

Clyde Put the spring retaining nut near the end of the firing pin in the vice with a rubber protector or soft jaws so not to mark it .Tighten the vice so it wont slip ,push forward on it until you can rotate it 90 degrees and release the tension Now you have the spring retainer in the vice a spring with no tension and the firing pin separate. Now undo the retaining screw near the saftey and your done !!!Obviously reassemble in the reverse order

I'd suggest getting either a friend or vice involved. Have the friend or vice hold the body of the bolt, while you pad the cocking piece with a narrow strip of leather. Clamp down on the cocking piece/leather with some vice grips, pull the desired distance and rotate. On my mausers I just pull straight back, and if I don't have the stock safety, drop a nickel in the space behind the shroud to hold all in place. Then it's an easy do to unscrew the entire unit.

There is NO space for a nickle on a m70 and you push forward NOT pull back. It takes 30 seconds to take it down Dont use a friend if it slips you will injure same !!!Use a vice .
