I did a search here on this subject and couldn't come up with any answers. How does the Speer 50 gr TNT do in a 1 in 9 twist out of a 223? (I for some rifle looney type reason have always wanted to try that bullet)
There are 4 left hand guns in 223 I am interested in. The Remington CDL and Browning A Bolt have 1 in 12 twists while the Ruger 77's and Savage's come with 1 in 9. This gun will be mainly going out and having fun shooting at a lower cost then my bigger guns plus it would be fun to head shoot grouse with it where a bullet like the TNT would be perfect. It would seem to me that a 1 in 9 would be more desirable for hunting deer and wolf since you can use heavier bullets. Am I wrong about that assumption?

I have a Rem model 7 with a Shilen 1 in 9 twist barrel in .223 AI. It shoots 40 to 70 grain bullets very accurately but will not stabilize 75 grain A Max bullets. It shoots 69 grain Sierra's and 70 grain Barnes as accurately as 40 grain Ballistic tips or a variety of 50 grain bullets.

Speer makes a 55 grain TNT meant for 22.250 and 220 Swifts, that are a little tougher, hence working better on the faster twist than the 50 TNT....

With the one in 9, if it vaporizes the 50 TNT, you can always load it for less velocity... a call to Speer to see what its RPM limit is might be worthwhile...

Form experience I can tell you, with a one in 9 twist don't waste money trying the 50 and 55 grain SPSXs they barely make it out of the barrel unless you slow the MV down to 22 Mag velocities...

Never tried them in a 1:9, but Speer does not recommend that you push them faster than 3400fps from a 1:10. They tend to come apart.

So that's the reason I couldn't find the bullet hole in one of my targets... grin grin grin

I have had no problems shooting them out of my Savage with a 1 in 9" twist - usually shooting into a half-inch or less. They are, in fact, one of my favorite bullets in both of my 223s. The other one is a CZ 527 American. My Savage has a 20-inch barrel, so the velocity is less than you'd get from a longer-barreled rifle.

So it is a firm... maybe. Calling Speer is a good idea.

Called Speer and they are closed until January 5th.
