there hard to find in Northern IL b/c of Steve!!

I have a savage 99 that was traded to my grandfather for an outboard motor in 1956,300 sav. made in 1949 according to the savage 99 website.I'ts in fair condition, with a clean bore but some surface rust.brass mag twister, small schnable forend and it has a redfield peep sight on it.
to my knowledge it was last fired in 1983 by me and sat it the rafters of my families camp until 3 years ago when I got it,a gallon of breakfree and 3 years later it don't look so bad.
It still has the surface rust on it though,any recomendations an getting it looking good again?

Buy some Flitz and go to it.. it removes surface rust really well. Picked up a 3.4oz bottle at Cabela's for about $10.

That rifle would be a 99EG, by the way. Great hunting gun.

personally if its an EG and means more to you as a hunter and family heirloom than anything...I would strip it and reblue it...not expensive...will make it look like a million dollars again and will do some good to protect the metal from corrossion...some ppl around here would call me a heretic for saying this....

Try WD40 and white Scotch-Brite on the surface rust. I think
you'll be pleasantly surprized.

I was told the marking on the bottom of the lever indicates the model(eg,c,ect)
the marking I found looks like it could be an F or an H or an E, but it is hard to tell,any ideas?

The bottom the lever indicates age based on the letter...the model if an EG is often marked on the front of the reciver...you would have to take the forearm off to see it. Post a picture but everyone here can confirm with relative assurance that it is a model EG w/o the hassle...

I would guess the EG model is the most common, work horse variant?

most common by far and the only schanble tipped 99 made in 1949 (I am 99% on this but will allow an expert to tell you for sure)...it it is a 1949 there should be two letters followed by the letter A on the lever boss.

1949-A
1950-B
1951-C
etc

Like I said though...the best thing to do is just post a picture...everyone loves looking at these old guns...

I pulled the fore arm off and the only marking I could find was an L stamped into the front of the reciever,but it could be a poorly stamped T,I looked at it with a magnafying glass and I'm pretty sure it's an L,mabey a 7?
it is a Chicopee Falls gun, and has proof tested stamped on the right side of the barrel,300 Savage on top,and Savage 99 on the left,steel butt plate and looks like a black plastic end cap on the pistol grip.the rear sight was removed for a Redfield peep,and the front sight is large and dovetailed in with a bead.

Hello All.

Just aquired a 99F in 308 Win...and was wondering if anyone could help me with the date of manufacture? The serial # is in the A180XXX range. I know it's not as old as some of the 99's that some of you lucky few have, but I am curious how old it is nonetheless.

It'll be a shooter, very excited about it. I'm a novice when it comes to rifles, this is the second rifle that I personally own. It should be a great deer hunting rifle for the MN northwoods.

Post you question in a new topic and you will get more info , and faster. I hunt near hibbing with a 308F.

Grogel - good luck for the rest of the season. Success has been low to moderate in the Bemidji area...with few deer seen by us.

I have yet to fire my 99F at a deer, but am very excited to do so!

I am in posession of my wife's great grandmothers 1926 savage 99 in 30-30. I believe that is the year posted when I asked about it a few months ago. The Great Grandma, Grandma and mother in law have killed over a dozen deer with this gun. I packed it several years ago on a scouting trip and fired 2 quick shots at a distant coyote, probably aiming too high.

As a bolt action guy I was very impressed how fast I got the second shot off.

Here is another original for your tally. It's an EG in 300sav. It's for sale on the free classified forum if anyone wants it. I have one more that has sling mounts added, other than that it's original, but that ones not for sale. Sure hope there's a lot more out there that didn't get all messed with. Good luck!

I just recently aqquired my first (and not the last) 99. As a fan of lever guns I have been remiss in not having at least one in my collection so I am now making up for my transgressions and ask forgivness from all.
It is a F model .300 ser#7660XX with a fold down rear sight, Weaver tip off mounts and a 3x9 Bushnell Sportview. Some of the blueing is missing under the receiver but that just add character to it. I was wondering if anyone can give me an idea as to when it was made. I'm guessing around '56-'58. That would make it about as old as me ('57).
With any luck I will be using it next year on Black bear in Alaska or at the very least Muley's in Utah/Colorado or Boar in CA.
I would also like to add, KIDMOE great looking gun. I'll post photos of mine once I figure out how to add pictures.
