R. Dean Taylor and indiana wants me. I remember the first time I heard that song. Around late 1971. I didn't like it then and I don't like it now. The other one was the night the lights went out in Georgia. And anything by the Jackson 5 and the Osmonds. I'm throwing up now. Derek, you gotta expand your horizons. It's time to move ahead. kwg

Any suggestions? I'm a big Dean Martin fan but I don't dig on his Italian songs...Also like a lot of the 1960s and 70s stuff but the car has a CD player now so my old mix tape collections are useless.

Certain hip hop is good stuff but, I damn well know it's not Half Dollar and G-Unit. Before they started using the N-word and such derogatory terms every other line, it was enjoyable. New stuff blows, more or less.

"...write a song like this?"

Nothing disgusts me more than the cheap copycat crap "country" music has been turning out. Clapton put out "Will I see You in Heaven" and a week later a dozen wannabe "tunes" in the same theme crawl out of a gutter somewhere, more parody than music. Country music without the mangled metaphor would be silent... I'm all for taking away their metaphors...

Wait, I obviously lied! Rap is a hundred times more disgusting than the sorry excuse for country music being played today...

Seems that the people who listen to that rap & that head banging "new rock" or "alternative rock" or whatever that stuff is , are the ones that have the most problems in their personal lives. Just an observation.

derek, you need to listen to more eminem if you want white music about guns.

i quote eminem,

"tempt me,
push me puzzies,

i need a reason to give this trigger a good squeeze!"

sad that they talk about using guns that way, maybe thats where our new president got his standpoint on guns. if half of what the "[bleep]" said was true, i would sell all my guns and leave the country.

Dean Martin is good. So is Frank Sinatra and 3 Dog Night. Throw in some Marty Robbins. He is also a classic. The1960's and 1970's had some real good music. I really like classic country also. I can't do the "bubble gum" stuff. Never could. It was always too childish but there was a lot of it in the 1970's. Music as I liked it started to die out by the 1980's. I am turning to the older and more classical Dean martin and Frank sinatra with a good helping of classic rock and roll. I'll even listen to an occasional Beatles. I just can't do rap or hip hop. Rap is evil and has no redeeming social value. kwg

Don't Take Your Guns To Town

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TrkGlWAbg2w

A young cowboy named Billy Joe grew restless on the farm
A boy filled with wonderlust who really meant no harm
He changed his clothes and shined his boots
And combed his dark hair down
And his mother cried as he walked out

[Chorus]
Don't take your guns to town son
Leave your guns at home Bill
Don't take your guns to town

He laughed and kissed his mom
And said your Billy Joe's a man
I can shoot as quick and straight as anybody can
But I wouldn't shoot without a cause
I'd gun nobody down
But she cried again as he rode away

[Chorus]
Don't take your guns to town son
Leave your guns at home Bill
Don't take your guns to town

He sang a song as on he rode
His guns hung at his hips
He rode into a cattle town
A smile upon his lips
He stopped and walked into a bar
And laid his money down
But his mother's words echoed again

[Chorus]
Don't take your guns to town son
Leave your guns at home Bill
Don't take your guns to town

He drank his first strong liquor then to calm his shaking hand
And tried to tell himself he had become a man
A dusty cowpoke at his side began to laugh him down
And he heard again his mothers words

[Chorus]
Don't take your guns to town son
Leave your guns at home Bill
Don't take your guns to town

Filled with rage then
Billy Joe reached for his gun to draw
But the stranger drew his gun and fired
Before he even saw
As Billy Joe fell to the floor
The crowd all gathered 'round
And wondered at his final words

[Chorus]
Don't take your guns to town son
Leave your guns at home Bill
Don't take your guns to town

I've always been partial to Tchaikovsky's "Quaker Puffed Oats Song", particularly the part at the end with all of the cannons going off.

"...This is the cer-e-al that's shot from guns - BOOM BOOM,
this is the cer-e-al that's shot from guns - BOOM BOOM..."

Best "killin'" song has to be "Down the River" by Chris Knight from Slaughters KY...

Down the River
Chris Knight

i was eightteen
my brother was twenty-one
one saturday evening
when all the work was done
we went down to the river,
had some trot lines to run

my brother walter
had a fight the week before
knocked a boy named wilson
through the pool hall door
they said you don't mess with wilson
unless you want a war

we put the boat in the water,
i made the engine run
loaded the lantern
against the sinking sun
and my brother walter
was loading his gun
and we went down the river

down past the coal docks
we wre running our lines
heard some drunken boaters
racing up behind
it was wilson and his cousin,
they had trouble on their minds

they passed on by us,
probably going to tend their pots
we headed up the river
with the fish we'd caught
but before we made the landing,
i thought i heard a shot
back down the river

my brother walter fell over the side
i couldn't find him no matter how i tried
and looked along the bank
but i couldn't find where they'd hide

they drug the river,
they searched it up and down
couldn't find his body
so they decided that he'd drowned
but i knew better
and wilson bragged around town

so one night i floated down
right above wilson's shack
i hid in the woods
till i saw him walk out back
i put a bullet in his head
and dropped him in his tracks
and we went down the river

down below the trestle
where the water runs slow
i chained him to an anvil
and then i let him go
and five years later
i ain't told a soul

and i ain't done much fishing,
i hardly wet a line
the death of my brother
is still heavy on my mind
i've been thinking wilson's cousin
better find a place to hide
cause i'm going down the river
yeah i'm going down the river

Don't judge Commander Cody by just that one song. He has tons of great albums and shotloads of tremendous music. How about "Down To Seeds And Stems Again Blues" or "Riot In Cellblock #9", "18 Wheels", "Mama Hated Diesels" and many more.
Oh Yeah, he also had GREAT musicians behind him. Headbanging-gangsta crap has No music, just "sample" and computer generated noise.

Never appeal to a mans "better side", he may not have one.

Gimme Back My Bullets - the bullets referred to are songs that "shoot" straight to the top of the charts. Not about guns at all...

Mississippi Kid on the other hand...

Eric Clapton remade Robert Johnson's "32-20 Blues" and did a stellar job of it...
