I am going to try some out in 6.5x284, I was wondering if anyone had any experience shooting them and if so, what distance into/from the lands have you found them to shoot the best?

I have read that they like a little jam (0.010) but was wondering others experiences?

I have some vintage Jimmy Knox 140`s and some of Swampys. I never got them where I thought they should be but only tested them at 100 yds with initial tests. I`ll be interested in your results. My newest favorite is the 130 grain Berger. I loaded 53.5 grains N165 and got 3081 fps and got unreal ES over the chrono. I`d definately jam the VLD`s, set up a dummy case with proper bushing used and seat long. Place it in the chamber and close the bolt. I`d add .005", +.010", and so forth up to a +.020". If you find any RL22 or N165 these are really good powders for this veteran case.

I've not shot Swampys' yet, he never returns my email questions so I haven't gotten around to buying yet. I have a good stash of Jimmys anyway.

As to depths, I basically soft seat all my JLKs, I'm basically .025-.040 past touching and chamber the round.

Bergers with their crazy double diameter steps etc... have driven me nuts at times with tight necked chambers, such that I've had better results with JLKs and will stick with them generally.

This is Ba$$ act wards of any way you seat a bullet for accuracy. Nobody can tell you what will work best in any chamber with any bullet. YOU have to start out hard in the lands. Mark your seated bullet out far enough, mark with a black magic marker the bullet. When you get four even rifling marks or however many lands you have that is you jam point. NOW you start testing. How are you going to measure set back from the jam point? How much neck clearance do you have with the bullet you intend to use? How much neck tension have you decided on?

Do you have the tools and the knowledge of how to interpret what the measurements tell you? Is this a pure for accuracy rifle or is this a hunting rifle?

I think you would d o yourself a favor, by reading on these topics. Go to Sinclair Int web site and find books on Accuracy and read. "The Bench Rest Shooting Primer is a good book to start with.

Bass ackwards? How? You find the point they touch and add a bit and its soft seated. Its won national matches for me so it can't be too far backwards...

Soft seating has been around for years and its well documented to work.

Have not shot the 6.5`s, but have shot the .25`s @ 1000. We worked up a load that shot to satisfaction, off the lands, and went with it. Your rifle may vary. Load and shoot them in your gun..

I currently use the .224-80 JLK in LR F-T/R matches. I have found the JLKs seem to perform well for me when jammed about .015 into the lands. This is completely unlike the 80gr SMK which seems to work best .020 from the lands.

I do not have axperience with the 6.5-284 as that is not an F-TR caliber but the folks who shoot that caliber where I go all use Bergers VLDs, JLKs and a few Lapuas. The VLDs all get jammed into the lands about .015.

When I talked with Swampy last year, he indicated that my findings were pretty much in line with expectations.

I just received a large shipment (well, for me) today, as a matter of fact. The postman was listing badly.

Welcome, FTR.

My workup mirrors your findings.

I found 0.020 into the lands the "sweet spot" so to speak for this particular rifle. I like what I am seeing right now.
