I own several of both. Certainly the McMillan is in a class of its own. One of the McMillan's is on a pre. 64 Mod. 70 in 30-06 & the other is on a custom Mauser in 257 Wby. One of the B&C stocks is on a .300 Win. Mag. custom Mauser that has taken big game on 3 continents. I had it steel bedded over 20+ years ago, & with most factory ammo shoots around an 1". With handloads a bit less. I have shot animals up to 425 yards with this rifle. The stock has been painted numerous times & the SS barrel & plated action shows ware. Why change when it works so well? I also have a switch barrel Rem. in 280/7MM Gibbs that shoots even better than the .300 Win. Mag. & its in a B&C stock. They work for me. If I didn't have the money for a McMillan I wouldn't hesitate to buy a B&C. Its like many things in hunting that cause great arguments & don't really amount to a pile of $hit from a practical stand point. Benchrest is another topic entirely. If it did why would my 2 B&C stocked rifles have taken over 200 big game animals?

There was reccently another thread about "What stock to use" McMillian is recognized as the best, most folks feel the Bell & carlson is a fine value. I have many bell & Carlson medalist stocks on custom Remington 700's. I think they are fine. The guns all shoot 1/2" or better and have heald their zero for a long time. They cost about 1/2 what a mcmillian costs. One other feature you can get on a B & C stock is to have it coated with Maxx Guard.......this is a satin coating that makes the stock easier to grip in wet condtions and also makes the stock much more silent if you brush up agaist somthing.B & C makes stocks for Cooper, Weatherby, Winchester, Remington and many others !

For some applications, like the Mini-Mauser/799 Remington, the B&C is an excellent option. For some other applications, I'm not so sure.
McMillan offers a lot of options if you're looking to stock a Remington, but less for some other actions. 1 thing is certain, you can't order a marbled/McSwirey finish from B&C.

I'm told elk especially like the "McSwirey" finish you reference. I quess it confuses them as to whether its a swirly or a swirey finish.

I guess that since most U.S. states require firearms hunters to wear blaze orange, stock finish isn't a mission critical event.

I have a couple of the McMillans and played with a B&C. For me, either McMillan (EDGE or McSwirly) is better - mainly stiffer - than the B&C. They cost up to twice as much though. Are they THAT much better? It depends on your desires. I have a couple of Rem600s and hate the OEM stock. I love Rem's mountain rifle stock. With McMillan I can order a mountain rifle stock inletted for a 600. Try that with B&C.
OTOH, I just ordered a B&C Medalist for a Rem700. I am tight on cash right now so I went the cheaper route and ordered a Ti clone from B&C.

I haven't had a McMillan stock, but I've had several B & C Medalists and Carbelites. The Carbelites are good. The Medalists have tended to make rifles shoot very well. I did have to alter a couple of them to make them fit the rifles. I believe they were model numbers 2960. I've put a Medalist on just about all of my 700's. These stocks have made rifles which had ho-hum accuracy shoot sub-MOA.

Mcm can cut shop times in half, others don't, there are FG and thats that. They have many styles and do almost anything you need in a stock(inletting) others do not. That is why McM is generally concidered better.

Jeff SO, you kill two birds with one rock and get your stock done in Blaze Orange.

Anyone know what a B&C Carbelite short-action stock weighs for a Model 70?
