Of course my brass doesn't look so brassy on the inside anymore. Other than leaving it in the tumbler for a couple weeks, are there any good tricks for cleaning cartridge cases? - I'm using Pyrodex. SW

Cat, if I have shot any Pyrodex I don't remember it. Does it clean up like black?

If it does, cool water with Castrol Superclean, citrus cleaner and simple green. De-prime brass, chunk in the solution, agitate and rinse several times. Brush out each one with a test tube brush thing (from Buffalo Arms). Set out in the sunlight to dry. No undue heat. After completely dry, tumble overnight with a smidge of White Buffalo Dust. DON'T forget to knock out the little particles of tumbling media stuck in the flash holes.

Speaking of Buffalo Arms, if you shoot BPCR just call Gullo and tell him to send you one of everything in his catalog. You'll buy it eventually.

Take care,

S

Cat,

4 words: I'm the dishwasher!

Well, about 1/2 of the time anyway. Point well taken, though. Soap, water & a good brushing. Kinda like the Joe Knocks in the Dr's office scene in THE GREAT SCOUT & CATHOUSE THURSDAY: 'Ya get it the same old way; we treat it the same old way'!

I have to go to Wally in the morning for work lunch stuff anyway, so I'll get a small brush for the brass & a bottle of windex for the barrel - I plan on shooting it a LOT more!

Thanks! SW

Ya, it cleans up about the same.

I use it mostly in my shotguns, but have messed with it in the orginal rifles....

Hey, Cat, I was looking something else up in my road atlas and just for the heck of it, I looked your hometown up. DANG! You've got a heck of a drive in front of you to go see the Whoopee John & the 6 Fat Dutchmen polka festival!! I thought I lived in the sticks!! It's also far enough north that I can imagine you folks playing softball if spring occurs on a weekend. Gotta be a great place to hunt and a clean air environment, though! SW

When all else fails, I sit on the deck with an adult beverage and some 0000 steel wool. Polishes em great..then load with 550 PP, put em in your belt and look like Quigly!!

We had snow the other day, and spring yesterday.

I have a big ol' leather bandoleer for my 12 gauge brass, and one for the 45/110 Sharps. Gets the looks at the gas pumps, for sure!

You may know this, but don't get the Windex with ammonia. Mike Venturino (Shooting Buffalo Rifles of the Old West) recommends Windex with vinegar. It may be a bit hard to find, but I found it at our local Cub Foods.

Best way to wash cases that have been loaded with Pyrodex or blackpower is to put them in a milk jug filled with a vinegar and water solution. About one tablespoon vinegar to a half gallon of water will neutralize the residue.
After shaking them around in this mixture, dump out the water, and then mix up a hot soapy water solution in the jug. Shake them around again, and then rinse them with hot clear water.
Then let them dry on an old towell until you reload again.

Nebr,

There is a faster, better way to clean BPCR brass than I have seen mentioned, so far. I'm sure you're gonna think I am nuts, but... The boys at my club who are avid BPCR shooters all have been using a method that I believe is/was pioneered by one of the members. They all deprime their brass as soon as they come off the line and drop it in soapy water (I think) Then when they get home they put it in a RCBS drum type tumbler with some kind of ceramic pellets. A couple of hours later, let them dry and they look like new... Naw... I'm not BS'ing you! For Real!!! The last match I shot, I just gave my brass to my buddy and he decapped it and put it in with his. When he gave it back, it was just like new. I don't know where these pellets come from, but my buddy does. And I know I can get some. I just haven't yet, because I use a vibratory tumbler.

BTW.... He tells me: "Don't even think about using them with bottlenecked cases..." He says that the pellet get so jamed up in bottlenecked cases that it is impossible to get them out without cutting the case in 1/2. (He's already tried it...) He says it doesn't much work on anything smaller than .38/55 cases.

If any of you guys want to try it just PM me and I will look into it and get back with you. ...the9.3Guy

Here's the source for the ceramic pellets, from ad in BPCR News. I bought the kit, and they do work. Didn't get the interior of my .40-65 brass entirely clean, but the outside sure is shiny and bright.

The washing machine trick became a sore subject at our house. When I was looking for something else, I found some shotgun brushes I must have bought at a garage sale or auction. The 410 brush fits the 10.4X47R pretty well, so I scrub the inside of the case after soaking in warm soapy water. Mrs Hogger wasn't too impressed with the smell, though so I bought a couple of fragrant candles to smooth things over. I sent Hodgdon an e-mail to see how 777 would work since it's supposed to be cleaner & not smell so strongly of sulphur.

My learning curve continues to bend!! SW
