So am I read all of these ballistics charts right that indicate the 7mm mag performs basically indentically to the 270 wsm with a wider selection of bullets, 2 more inches of barrel (assuming the 26" is recommended, but I don't know), and a little more recoil?

Think you should be able to exceed velocity of the WSM with any barrel lenght in the 7 Rem mag.Myself I perfer 26 inch tubes on all belted magnums. As low as I'd go 24.

I had a 270WSM, and I liked it.
If the 7 WSM was readily available in say, the Kimber Montana, or Sako 85, I would probably own one...

Sounds like fun, Mike.
Since I sold my 7 RUM, I am without any 7s.
I am thinking of maybe a 280 or like I said, a 7 Whizzum if I can find a decent rifle in same.

I know you were kidding, Bob.
I think you are actually right, however, I enjoy engaging in hypotheticals, especially with Mike!

7STW,
I prefer the 7 myself, so bought two 7 WSM Kimbers so I can have choices...

If I didn't reload, it'd be 270 WSM. Otherwise, 7mm WSM hands down.

Yep, one Montana, one Classic. FWIW the Classic action is a heck of a lot smoother than the Montana. Maybe I should cycle more rounds through the Montana... grin

If you really want versatility to all big game in Oregon, you cannot beat a 30-06. However, don't be misled by published ballistics. The Springfield was designed with lower pressures in mind, and 30-06 ammo and handload manual data has reflected those lower pressures since.

To give to an idea, you can shoot a 168 grain TTSX at 2900 fps+ from a 24" barrel. That bullet has a BC of .470. It makes for a very flat shooting rig that will handle deer, black bear, and elk very well. Further, recoil is mild evven when you get a rig--like my M-70 Classic--that weights 7 3/4 lbs with the scope.

However, if you are still bent on a 7mm WSM, here is a good one:

IMO, the difference in these cartridges is minimal. If your going for BC then the 7mm, but what are we talking at reasonable range...a couple clicks on the scope? For either cartridge over a certain range your going to be clicking the elevation on the scope so the .277 is going to take a little more.

I have heard that people are plenty happy with the .270 130 gr Barnes TSX for dispatching animals. It seems to me that it starts getting into how much recoil do you want for that added performance?
