Has anyone had success using w 760 with 223 remington? I am loading 55 grain spirepoint varmint bullets in my 223 (1 in 12 twist) and currently using BL C2 powder. On the relative burn rate chart w 760 powder in close to BL C2 and was wondering about switching to w 760 as I have a couple of pounds of it on hand.. Any comments would be welcome, good idea, bad idea, or just plain stupid... you be the judge.

It wouldn't be stupid... you'd have less velocity and less pressure than BLC 2, which is closer to W 748....

but hey, if that is what you have, then it is what you have...

it should be accurate, just less MV...

223s are like VWs, when it comes to the question of what to feed them, they will run perfectly on just about anything...

Haven't tried W-W 760 but have tried H414 which is the same thing in the 223. I did it out of curoisty and was kind of surprised. Accuracy while not outstanding was certainly acceptable for varmint shooting. My notes show that I was getting 3119 with the 55gr Hornady bullet Lake City 86 cases and the CCI 450 small rfle mag primer. The only drawback that I found was getting that much powder in the case, a six inch drop tube helped a lot. Dumping straight from the powder measure produced spilled powder frequently. As Seafire pointed out the 223 isn't real fussy.

I think 748 is a much better choice, but I'd try 760 if that's all I had...

760 isn't all I have for powder but it is the powder that I am currently using for my 270 Win rifle, and was wondering if it was practical to use the same powder for both rifles. Certainly they are very different cases, as I load 52 grains of 760 in my varmint loads for the 270, and I have been using 26 grains of BL C2 in my 223. It would be handy to only need one type of powder.

I'd standardize on the Blc2 if I was trying to keep one powder for both calibers...Blc2 is the same as W 748...

Agree, AckleyBee. Personally, I'd take 748 over BL-C(2). They're quite similar in bulk burn rate, but actually quite different and I happen to believe that 748 is more versatile.

I'd agree with that but BL-C (2) (WC846) is a lot easier and cheaper to come by. Most of my guns will shoot it (BL-C(2) sub .5 MOA.

H-335 has been an outstanding powder in the .223 for decades. .223's are generally shot in volume. Try some H-335.
