In the rifles that I load for N550 produces great accuracy, and velocity (.270 WCF, .30-06, .300 WSM, .260 rem). For the .300 WSM, you might not need to look any further, especially with the 150 TTSXs.
Only downsides are co$t, and availability.....

Marcus, I shot some N550 last year out of my 300 WSM.

150 grain E-Tips and 64-65.5 grains N550.

150 grain TTSXs and 66 grains N550.
(Work up of course, N550 has a little zing!)

Velocity was in the 3100-3200fps range. Accuracy wasn't any different than any other powder.

I use H4350 for 150-180's with good results.

Good luck with it Marcus.

One or two things I remember is that it meters well and produced the highest fps of any other powder I tried with 150's.

The absolute most accurate load for any 150 was a Partition and 66 grains of H4350. That load shot awesome around 3100fps.

And what's with this Mr. stuff? (grin)

That's in line with what I'm loading, just a little north of 66 grains of N550 for an average of 3200-3225 fps out of the the 3 .300 WSMs I load for. I've had better luck with WLRMs for the spark plug.
H4350 is one powder that I haven't tried, though I tried the IMR version with no luck.
Sam's right about a prudent work-up for this powder (N550). I blew a primer while working up a .270 load last year....

Will be working this load up. Hopefully I'll find a sweet spot!!!

You left an important consideration off of your downsides list besides "co$t, and availability....." shortened barrel life is another. if it were me I would find something that will work with VVN150 and let someone else toast their throat with the 550.

Mine are all hunting rifles. I wish I could be so lucky as to shoot out a barrel.....then again there's always Hart, PacNor, etc, etc. Maybe a 7mm WSM next time, or maybe a 6.5??
Ah, the possibilities...

We have already had a thread discussing this. Show me the proof that N550 "toast their throat" any faster than N150 at similar pressure/velocity.

I would sure like to see actual evidence that N550 "toasts throats" as well.

Ok Guys need some help my source here in the City sold out of the N550, but do have the N150. My question is what's the difference between these two powders, and would the N150 work with the 150grn bullets?

I tried to tell you about this yesterday, but nobody will listen.
You wont get quite as much speed with the VVN150 as you will with the VVN550 but as a more than adequate trade-off you will get about twice the number of shots before re-barrel time, as an added bonus VVN150 is also cheaper adding to the bargain!!!

p.s. the biggest difference between these two powder's is that 150 is a single base powder and 550 is a double base, the double base has a higher flame temp and for some reason VihtaVuori's flame temp exceeds other manufacturers that also use a double formula.

I did find 2lbs. of the N550, so I'll try both over the chrono and see which has the best accuracy. Thanks Rock!

Rockchucker, we are still waiting on your source.

Wow, it is twice the number of shots now. Funny.
