I wasn't aware that black or black sub would respond to fine tuning so well! That's a FNG for ya! I tried a number of combinations of primers and Pyrodex CTG for my 10.4X47R, and found that magnum primers hurt groups more than helped. 55.0 gr worked well, but I hoped for better and experimented carefully. - My Vetterli has a none-too-stout rear lockup. 57.0 gr was too much, because one of the primers bulged slightly at the firing pin indentation. Nearly everything I tried gave vertical stringing groups until I tried 53.0, which gave a one-hole group. To insure it wasn't a fluke, I shot a group of 5 on a clean target as shown below. The flyer was due in no small part to the atrocious trigger. I fired a fouling shot when I began shooting, and ran a patch wetted with Windex w/ vinegar after every 3 shots to try & keep the fouling consistent. I've contacted Hodgdon's to see if 777 can be sub'ed for CTG, and I also sent a message to Accurate arms about 5744. I'm a little leery of smokeless, though and will probably wind up using FG when I run out of CGT.

Regarding the wet patch after every 3 shots, is that a useful practice? Any other BPCR fine-tuning tricks? I shouldn't be such a pest about this, but dang it, it's FUN!!! Are these old rifles cool, or WHAT!! Good looking results.

Yes, BPCR is a whole different can o' worms. Just a small adjustment can make a huge difference in performance, much more so than with smokeless. I had to toss lots of previously-held ideas out the window.

Fun, ain't it ?

One of the things that makes this so much fun is that I LEARN something every time I go to the range. All the new & improved rifles & cartridges are well & fine, but one has only to look the specs & data up before sending lead downrange. With BPCR, thought is required. - It only hurt for a little while! 'Bout like eating a sno-kone too fast!

Since I found this old Vetterli and a M95 Steyr, the only other rifles I have shot are my 444P and a 357 carbine. I haven't shot a pistol in months, and I really need to get back to that at least a little. Well, except I've got another Vetterli in a different caliber coming.

Those new rifle guys with their 7mm/50BMG Belted Hyper Mag Tooth Loosener & Bambi Liquifiers don't know what they're missing!! SW
