Do you happen to have any data on the nosler 120 bt with sr4759? I am shooting a 7mm08 savage axis. I am trying to lighten the load so my wife will enjoy shooting it.
I have sr4759, h4895 and imr 4350 powders.
I seen you used 100 gr and 139 gr with 25gr of sr4759.
So it looks like its possible to use the same for 120gr. Am I correct?
Thank you

Helped a friend make a light recoiling load for his son. He will be shooting his first centerfire rifle. A 7-08 Savage

22 grs of SR 4759, rem brass, fed 210 primer, 120 nos bt velocity 2175 fps

I just choose the mid range powder charge from an old Speer book figuring it would be good for practice. It shoots tiny clusters at 100 yds! We are going to leave it alone for his fall junior coues wt and javelina hunts.

When I trained my kids with my 7x57, I started them out with Seafire's Blue Dot loads and 120 gr Hornady V Max bullets. Very mild. When it came time to hunt I loaded a max charge of H-414 behind 120 gr Nosler ballistic tip.

My daughter took a doe that year with one shot at 250 yds. (beginner's luck)!

Son-in-law started the kids last fall with downloaded 95 partitions in the .243 and the 120 Sierra at about 24-2500fps in a 7-08 Mountain Rifle. The 120 Sierra worked great at 80-100 yards, at those velocities it was fairly tough.

Bingo,

First welcome to the Campfire!

and yes, a charge of 25 grains with a 120 grain bullet of course would be just fine.. in a 7/08, IMR listed the max charge with that as 26 grains. MV will be in the 2400 to 2600 fps range depending on barrel length etc.

30 grains of IMR 4198, H 4198 or Reloader 7 would also work just fine and be just as accurate...RL 7 being my first choice..but IMR 4198 has proven just as capable... 2400 to 2500 fps MV range.

use no fillers, and use a regular large rifle primer, no need for a magnum primer..

best of luck with it.

best regards

My low recoil hunting load is 39gr Benchmark with the 110gr TTSX. Easy to shoot and still capable of taking just about anything out to 200 yards.

In the rifle i had for my wife I ran the 120NBT full throttle. Felt recoil was nil to me. And my wife, being recoil sensitive, didnt seem to mind. Granted her rifle was closer to 8lbs all up. Id rely on stock design that lent itself to recoiling straight back and a good 1" decelerator pad, The 120 NBT is a pussycat on the shoulder and a death ray on WT deer

Well I just got back from shooting 3 rounds of each. The ones with the imr 4350 did the best. I the recoil is great with the sr4759. I was a little leary about shooting the other powders so the groups werent all that great. But I did hit the target each time. I got a 1.5 group with the 4350, about a 4" group with the h4895 and about a 6" group with the sr4795. I think with a few tweaks I can be shooting 1" or less groups with the sr and the h powders. I will keep the 140 grain bullets for elk, and play around with the others.

This was with Blue Dot and a 7 x 57 Model 70 Featherweight...

however the same rifle will do the exact same grouping with SR 4859 also...

This is a 210 lb blacktail taken with the same rifle using a load of SR 4759, with a 115 grain Speer HP...

[Linked Image]

and we all know it is all about shot placement... and the low recoil of an SR 4759 load can make it so much easier...

here's an example...

My daughter ran a 2,100-2,200fps Blue Dot 140BT load last year for hunting inside of 100yds. It worked well, but I'm looking for something with a bit flatter trajectory for next season. I picked up some of those 110gr TTSX's and I think we can hit 2,600-2,700fps with 32-33gr of H4198. Should be able to run a 175yd zero and be "point and shoot" out to 200yds without undo mid-range rise. We'll keep running Blue Dot and 100gr HP's for practice.

Lots of great points in this thread. Do any others have some "on game" experiences with these lighter 7-08 and 100-120gr loads?

What I ended up doing for my son is using trailboss for the low velocity practice loads in his 243 and (well under 2000 fps) and then a "low" recoil equivalent deer load. Hodgdon site has the data, but he shot a lot of the trailboss loads to start and then had no problem when I switched to the hunting loads. In my case, I did have to re-sight in because the TB load shot much higher POI. In my case, I used 100 gr bullets for each and though about trying different weight bullets with TB until I could get POI closer to hunting load but have not tried it yet.

Dear Friends,

I'm newly joined and a reloader. Could Seafire or others please give me reduced loads for 7mm-08 Rem?

Specific propellant powders I request are SR 4759, Blue Dot, Unique, Universal.

Bullets are N 120gr BT, H 139 gr, N 160gr Partition. I'm willing to try Speer 120gr, or similar.

I'm familiar with H4859. I'm looking for reduced power loads for target and hunting WTD, broadside or angle shots.

I would appreciate published data, but do not preclude empirical data from experienced shooters. Of course, I assume full responsibility for my use of data.

Thanks a million!

Sincerely,

Jack from PA

This, I load 40grains RL15 for my youth load and 44 for me. It's awesome in both my Tikkas. Youth load is easy on the shoulder, my 15 year old 100 lb daughter shoots it with ease.

Good luck finding SR-4759. They stopped making it quite a while back.

I'd be looking for a 7-30 Waters bullet for that speed.

If you can find some hen's teeth (SR-4759), it looks like ~ 20.0 gr of it will get you where you want to be, based on Speer's data for the 7x57 and 130-145 gr bullets.

Try the H 4895 I used it for reduced loads for the grandkids in 243’s and my son in his 7mm-08 when he was little. It make very accurate reloads in everything I’ve used it in.

Sierra bullets still expand at the lower velocities. My grandkids have liked a good many deer and a bunch of pigs with reduced loads. It opened my eyes to the fact I’m over gunned with all my cannons. They drop animals right in their tracks.

Upper-end load of Blue Dot with a 120NBT. I want to say it was around 21-22gr. Made about 2,400fps from a 20" barrel. I'd start at 20gr and bump up in half grain increments.

We zeroed about an inch high at 100yds and it made a fine deer load out to 150yds. We shot the 140NBT at 2,100-2,200fps before that with a lesser charge of Blue Dot. It was a killer on several deer inside 100yds. Always penetrated on broadside lungs and was very gentle/quiet to shoot. The 120gr load was a bit flatter in trajectory, so we graduated to that later.

NOTE: Found my load data. It was 22gr in the 7mm-08 for 2,350fps with the 120NBT in the 20" barrel. I'd still work up though.
