I was thinking of rebarreling my model 7 to a 358 win, but just came across this 35-284. It has the same OAL, and all the benefits and negatives of the 284 case, but from what little I have found, it will REALLY drive a 35 cal. bullet. It looks like it takes a minimum of barrel length and about 5-10 grains less powder than a 350 rem mag to get about the same velocity.

ex.-35-284= 225gr bullet 22"bbl 53gr IMR 3031 2700 fps
350 rem mag 225gr bullet 22"bbl 62gr BL-C(2) 2700 fps

I was thinking of the 358 for a fairly light recoiling brush gun that would allow a quick second shot. That and the fact that I would have to swap bolt heads eliminated the 350 rem mag from consideration. This 35-284 sounds good, but I am having trouble digging up info on it. Anyone out there have any experience with it, or know someone who does?

I did the 35-284 in a short action, a Savage 99CD, and ran into OAL issues with most bullets over 225 grains. Given a choice, I like the 338-284 with the 210 grain Partition better, however neither the 338-284 or 35-284 offer a meaningful performance bump over the 338 Fed or 358 Win in a short action rifle.

I have one on a Rem. short action as well. Brown Precision stock, skeleton everything, 6lb. with scope. Heavy bullets take up alot of powder space, so using faster powders we can still get vel. gains over the Whelan, however it's not a 'fairly light recoiling' rifle. It will get your attention with the 250 gr. bullets. I now have a similar rifle on a long action Rem, 6 lb. 7 oz. in 35 Brown/Whelan. About 100 fps faster than the 284 and bullets can be seated out a ways. Both rifles are pretty heavy hitters in the moose patch. Mark

All I can say is your chrony is off. No way on God's green earth a 35-284 is faster than a 35 Whelen under any bullet powder combinations. I don't know what a 35 "Whelan" is so maybe you could elaborate. OBTW, a 35-284 is not a "short action" as that is left to the 222/223's of the world. Regards, Rick.

Mine will push a 245 gr. Nosler PTN to 2656 fps. with 66 gr. W-760 and WLRM primer. Yeah, I know, Nosler doesn't make a 245 gr. PTN. I grind the lead tip off so it's a flat nose and they weigh in at 245 gr. That is a full case of powder by the way (W-W brass).

This is not a long range caliber and hunting here in SE AK shots are usually not long anyway. I grind the tip off for two reasons, 1) So I can seat the bullet out closer to the lands, and 2) To allow for more powder space.

W-W 760 is the only powder I can get this velocity with. If you choose to use 225 gr. bullets you could prolly do better with a faster powder.

284 case has the same capacity as the '06. .35-284 is a short action Whelen.

Have you considered a 35 Wapiti?

1flier.

I want to check out your rifle sometime.

Stainless action/bbl?

I've got 35 Whelen dies and bullets, but no rifle. You know, the cart before the horse syndrome.

My case capacity chart shows the 284 at 66 grains and the 30-06 at 69 grains. Less than 5% different, but a little different. Of course, that could change between brands/lots of brass too.

+1 on the idea this is NOT a low recoil load. My lightweight .358 with 225gr Barnes TTSX's SMACKS you.

I like the idea of a 35/284 though. If my levergun would feed them I might go that route. I am getting 225's out at 2500fps, though, so I guess enough is enough.
