Im running a 40mm objective on a #4 barrel, can I get away with low rings or do I need medium's on a Ruger 77?

There are many different #4 Contours, old and new medium and low designations for M77 rings, different brands of scope, power ranges, length of tube, etc. Your question isn't easily answered without a little more info.

So, yes, new low rings, which are the same as old mediums might work with some #4 contours and some 40mm scopes. New mediums, which used to be high, would work with more #4 contours and scopes with shorter main tubes than would be possible with the first option. Old lows might not work at all...

Does that clear things up?

Tongue firmly in cheek, here. wink

The Warne mediums are almost the high rings of old and plenty of clearance for 40mm scope on a long shank #3 barrel.

Are there more streamlined or lighter weight options? Or maybe I should say are there any other rings with more snob appeal that don't require an adapter base?

I have ruger lows on my tang safety 300 with a 3-9x40 vari-XII. I would prefer mediums though as it is really close. Factory contour barrel.

Tejano, if you find some let me know. IMHO however Ruger rings are about as bullet proof as they come even if they are bulky and heavy. An M77 will not likely ever be a featherweight anyway.

I've got medium rings on my old tang safety .280 with a 6X42 and a #1 contour barrel. Just clears with Butler Creek Flip Caps. E
