I was just a local gun store yesterday to look at a Savage 99 in 308 cal.that is up for auction. Looking the rifle over it looked great. Only problem is the boss code was the letter F (1954). Murray's book said they did not make it until 1955. What do you all think.

Boss codes are not 100% right. My dad has a .300 EG that is 2 years older than the boss code says it is. The code says its a 1951, but he bought it 2 years before that. He would know, I was born in 1951, and he ordered it form a hardware store that his best friend worked at. Paid 100 bucks for it. He is sure of the purchase date. So I wouldn't worry about it being off one year.

I don't think the 308 win caliber was available in ANY production rifle until 55. Based on that, can't be a 54, unless it has been re-barreled What is the serial #?

I've yet to see a 1955 catalog advertising the 308 win cal.
First shows up in 1956 cat.

When it comes to choosing friends....I'm at an age where I'd rather have 4 quarters than 100 pennies.

Could it be a poorly struck H?

A 900,000 series SN rifle shouldn't have an F, though we've seen the occasional weirdness with the stamps. The 900,000's started in 1955 as far as we know.

Although the 308 was introduced to the public in some sporting rifles in 55...I'm with you Jed...I don't think the 308 was available in 99's until 56. If it is poorly struck an "H" that would make it a 56 and solve the mystery.

Seen some G marked 308 recievers with 55 date codes but a 54 date code I've never seen.
