A little ways out of Cody and Powell near Clark a guy was mauled by a sow with three cubs. He got the grizzly with three shots from a .41 mag but was severly mauled in the process. Broken ribs and ripped up face. They had to fly him to Billings for the face reconstruction I believe. He had another guy with him who helped him out but didn't see the attack.

I will try and get a link to the story in the local paper. Been a heck of a week for the local animal population here. First the chainsawed mountain lion now this bear. Maybe next week a wolf can go after someone.

Geez... Good thing he was able to get in a few licks with the .41.. Wonder if he wished he'd had an Alaskan .454 strapped to his belt..

Can you believe no mention of hardcast or jacketed and what the load was? Don't even have the penetration numbers or his three shot group size. What's reporting coming to.

Lots of good info missing here.

Any idea who the "grizz hunter" was?

G&F will try their best to hang the guy.

As a wildlife biology student, I had a grad student in my classes who was studying black bears in the Berkshires. He carried a .357 and was comfortable with it. I thought it wouldn't stop a bear but he said all the park guys carry them. That being what they're issued, not what would work the best. I rode with US Fish and Wildlife for 2 Summers and they all had 2" Smith and Wessons. I've yet to hear anything good about .357's in bear country though. I don't deal with bears, but for black bears, I think it's a little light. I bring a .44 Super Blackhawk to in Maine because I had a bears in camp. I had one thinking about joining me in the Dead River. My friend got followed into camp by one at night.

It was a guy out of Clark. Heard a rumor this morning that the bear took him off a fourwheeler but don't know if it's true.

That was my first thought.

Probably a Yamaha Grizzly or Kodiak...

A vary large sow grizzly was killed on the Russian river a few years back with a 9mm auto. Using solid bullets. When I know the chance of bad bears is high, I carry my old Smith&Wesson .44 mag, but only because of the flat tip bullets, the rest of the time I'm comfortable with my .357 mag 639 PD.

Contrary to popular opinion, bears don't like to be shot, run like crazy when they are.

Might have been a lot worse if he hadn't had the .41 along. It's easy to second guess his pistol choice from the sidelines, but at least he was carrying one and is alive to tell the tale.

41 mag is more than sufficient for the job. Placement could be problematic when your head's in a bears mouth.

These type stories fascinate me and I'm glad the man survived.

I agree with this comment. Its good to see this man alive, no matter what he decided to take into the woods

Why? He was fighting for his life. He's got the scars and hospital records to prove it.

One of my Dr's told me one time "if a grizzly is after you kill it! Even if you get a BIG BIG fine it won't be near as much as the Dr and hospital bill will be. Not counting all you pain and suffering you will have to go thru...........if you survive!!!!"

G&F won't go after him anyway. Grizzlies are under the ESA so it's under federal juristition.
