Hi All,

I just picked up a Savage 24 Series P in 22 magnum over 20 gauge. Serial number is B752XXX. Have looked around some and cannot find much into in the Series P.

Can anyone tell me approximately how old this rifle is and a range of values? Thank you.

If the serial numbers on the 24s ran with the serial numbers on the 99s at that time (which I think they did) , then your gun was made about 1974.

I'm not trying to confuse, but I have a Sav 24J-DL, .22mag over 3" 20ga, with walnut stock and a satin receiver that has no serial number. I think that they were made in 1972. Good luck.

croldfort ,
The Gun Control Act of 1968 mandated serial numbers on ALL firearms. Your 24J-DL must have been made prior to 1968 , unless someone removed the number. It is illegal to remove/alter serial numbers.

In this state it's illegal to own a gun with a serial number that was removed.

Thanks guys. Any idea of value on the 24-P? I can take and post pictures of that would help. I would rate the gun in fair condition. I will probably sell it as I only purchased it to help out a couple in need of money for a house payment.

What can I say? Date? My gun does not appear to be altered. It was my camper gun for over 30 yrs and bought used. It has a satin receiver with a fox and quail. I have been told that some of them weren't numbered. Please help? Thanks.

Wasn't commenting on your gun, was just expanding on what Mike had said.

I'd help, but I know nothing about Savage 24's. However, if it was made in 1970 or earlier it should have a stamp somewhere on it consisting of one or two numbers followed by a letter, with all of them inside of an oval. Might be faint or hard to read. If you can find the letter, we can date it for you.

croldfort. Calhoun has it spot on. Your DL will have the same oval stamp as 99's and most all other Savage/Stevens firearms made between 1949 and about 1971. Look carefully for a small oval stamp at the chamber end of the bbl and on the lug. It will contain a 1 or 2 digit number followed by a single letter. You may need a magnifying glass. That letter denotes the year of manuf. Post letter here for dating, or go to the FAQs on www.savage24.com. DonW

OMG.

It's a 24P. The P stands for Predator. The Predators were made after the Stevens 24's were ended. That gun should have a serial number.

Pretty sure all the DL's had them to.

I'm outta town with no catalogs but I'm pretty sure on his one. The Predators were made right up till the end of the 24's last year going by memory.

Hey, Don! I found a circle with a 9S or S6 on the Mod 24J-DL. The S may indicate that it was made in 1965. Does anyone know the years that they made the satin receivers with the grouse/turkey? and fox with a gold trigger in .22mag over 3" 20ga. Thanks. George

Here are pics of the 24P. It definitely needs cleaning up. Still trying to make up my mind whether I want to sell it or keep it.

croldfort, Believe the satin receivers on the DLs stopped in about 1967. Savage continued to make Deluxe model 24's, but they had blued receivers after '67. Still had the walnut monte carlo and rolled stamping receiver, but no satin nickel.

M-D, the 24 DLs did not have serials until late, late 68 or early '69, but the oval codes continued until about '71.

We have 2 different 24 we are talking about here. Racer's 24 does have a serial and I agree with Mike that it would date to 1974, or so.

Both are neat guns, and command a good bit of interest in keeping with the 3 - C's: Condition, configuration and community. They are asking obscene prices for them at gun shows in our area.

Ya, confusing thread. I thought the P didn't have a serial number, not the DL. P's came out long after the serial numbers were being stamped.

croldfort, I have the same model as yours but with an 'R' date code (1964).
