Hi has anyone used 6.5X52R in a 25/35 rifle? I have heard of people doing it , and was wondering about the .007 differance in bullet diameter, could i use 6.5 bullet's to reload with, as there is a better selection than25 cal bullet's any in put would be appericated, Hubert <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Hi,

I personally have not done it, and would not use 6.5mm bullets in a .25 Cal rifle. If the bore was weak, I would slug the barrel to determine exact dimensions.

The very largest you would want to exceed with jacketed bullets would be .002". Changing bullet diameter would have an impact on pressure, and could be dangerous.

I have some 303 Savage CIL bullets that measure .310", .002" oversize. However, I am hesitant to load these bullets as I do not have any loading data.

In addition, the design on the .264" bullet may not work well in the twist rate of the 25/35, compromising accuracy.

The 6.5x52 uses the standard .257 bullet, not .264. The .25/35 & 6.5x52R are identical, the latter is just the European designation for the cartridge. Last year I put together a Contender Carbine with a custom .25/35 barrel and have been shooting the Sellier & Bellot "6.5x52R" ammo in it with perfect results. I measured the bullet diameter against ".25/35" ammo and they are the same. Sometimes names can get confusing, i.e. .256 Newton is a true 6.5, not a .257.

Hi Thank's for the reply,I supected something like that was going on, I have 87 grain and 117 gr round nose bullet's that I load for my 25/35 and they work ok, I just like to try differant thing's as long as it is safe, Now to the 303 user I have lee precision dies for my 303, and it came with a loading table and say's bullet diameter .311, I have never used .311 bullets as the .308 shoot just fine in both of my 99 .303s, but it says on the loading sheet from lee that, QUOTE:these are 30-30 loads reduced 10% for your safety, you can try them if you wish, I beleive when using oversize jacket bullet's there is a much thinner line between a safe load and a dangers one, so be very careful if you try them ,good luck. The following comments are some info I found in my own hand books when I looked up some reloading info for my son.

Vol 1 PO Ackley
25-35 WCF and the Marlin 25-36 are similar except that the Marlin is longer and will hold 36 gr black powder while the 25-35 will only hold 35gr.The 25 Remington is the same brass except that the brass is rimless .All the above calibers can be loaded with the 25-35 reloading data.

Ref: Hornady Hand Book 3rd Edition
Repeats most of the above and adds that the European designation for 25-35 WCF is 6.5x52R

Ref: NRA Hand Loading
Repeats all the above and states that the 25 Remington will not interchange with the 25-35. The max pressure should not exceed 40200c.u.p. Typical working pressure should be 37000
c.u.p.

Ref: Metalic Cartridge Reloading
Has most of the above info and goes on to say that ......For reasons obscure to this author SAAMI pressures specfications
are substantially lower for 25-35 than they are for 30-30.

My comments :
It appears that the 25-35 pressures are very conservative as compared to the pressures listed for 30-30 .This is especially true when considering the fact that 25-35 brass is derived from and or made from 30-30 brass and both calibers were chambered in the same rifles such as Savage 99 and Win 94.If a gun will handle 30-30 it sure will handle 25-35 with a max bullet of 120gr .This assumes that the gun is in good repair . I spent a good portion of my Mechanical Engineering career working in welding ,heatreating, and non destructive testing of numerous metals and have yet to hear of a natural aging process of metals that will reduce the tensil strength of steel .If this were a factor in the strength of steel , bridges and other 100 year old structures would be falling down regularly. For these reasons I have no problem with shooting old weapons in good condition.
