I just picked up 150 gas-checked 220 gr RNs in 338 cal.

Anybody got an idea of loads to get 'em down range w/ accruacy and enough speed to kill paper or something?

Thanks,

efw

Any Hodgdon H4895 loaded down to 60 percent of max for bullet weight.

Hawk1, thanks!

What is a safe max velocity with a gas-checked bullet like this?

well I use a load of 35 grains of SR 4759, Large Rifle Primer
with a 200 grain bullet and that gives me an MV of 2400 fps..
Model 70 with a 24 inch barrel..

accuracy is superb...

Well,

It depends on how well the bullet fits the throat and groove, lube quality, bore quality, bullet hardness and the design of the bullet laugh That help? grin

I like the H4895 method for one simple reason: It allows you to work up to published max jacketed loads. When you get inaccuracy, leading and the like, that gives you an idea where to stop.

Using the slower fuel also reduces pressure on the base with top loads, which is what causes leading and lube stress to begin with.

2,200 is generally easily attainable in most rifles with checked bullets.

Thanks, I need to check into available moulds to extend the usefulness of my 338-06. Should make a great cast hunting load.
