I was shooting my newly aquired 577/450 Martini last weekend with a very new (to me) type of bullet patch - teflon plumbing tape.

With a piece of bubblewrap to act as an additional case fiilerand base wad. It shot fine with a 500 grain bullet and a 400 grain(I think) bullet, with 80 grains of FFg.

Burned clean, and accuracy was as very good, considering I had never shot thew rifle before, and the brass was new.

Anybody else use teflon tape, bubble wrap, or any other wird stuff for patch and base wads?

This rifle is a lot of fun to shoot, and kicks FAR less than my 45/110 Sharps, which is now in the house of Hornhead.

I got his Martini and some other assorted stuff.

My direct experience with PP has involved paper of various types, no "high tech" stuff. I've heard of some having success with a few of these things, teflon tape being the more common point of reference for success. Also heard of the other side on it as well. Chatted with a fellow once that claimed duct tape worked well to make sabots for subcaliber munitions in a very large bore rifle as well. Well, his rifle had a 16" twist and he was using 100 grn. 6mm bullets. HE seemed sincere, I am sincerely skeptical.

My take on the viability of substitutes is that anything that will separate cleanly from the bullet, and won't leave toxic waste in the bore will probably work. Don't forget that some of these things contain abrasive materials since the manufacturer never imagined somebody would use it in such fashion. An example found in some types of paper is Kaolin, a clay like material used as a pigment and render paper opaque. It also renders paper a bit glossy. If you need to "polish" your bore, fine. If not, don't worry, a good shyster can probably get you millions for pain and suffering.

I am..........disturbed.

I've used plumbers tape on Schuetzenplinker bullets with smokeless in a chrome bore 7.7 Arisaka. They separate nicely, and shot fine. I did not work up loads or compare loads, but just tried to see if they would work. They seemed to.
I shot one round of .577 Snider with Dupont Fg and a .58 round ball. The patch was found about 10 feet out. I used that patch to secure the bullet from falling out of the unsized case during handling.
One problem I find is the stretch of the tape gives variable thickness to the patch, and is hard to apply uniformly. Because of the stretch, it almost takes three hands to apply from the roll.

I also have Snider Ross, but it needs restoring.

Next project!
I found that if I use 1/2" stuff, and put it across the base then kinda make a turn and start wrapping it goes not too bad.

I did not size my casees , either.

A gallon jug at 1oo yards is the next goal!

i must say i'm NOT all that happy to hear how much LESS the 577/450 kicks with respect to the 45/110
i'll find out this weekend.
i'll be using the T/C .457 wads as an over powder wad, and slap a little goo under the bullet base. T/C wads are too dang expensive so i think i'll steal one of cat's stetsons and make my own.
i've been using teflon plumbing tape for years.
hard to find good cotton bond any more for paper patching.
who am i kidding - i can't even roll a half decent cigarette let alone paper patch.
i was a failure during the drug wars of the 60s.

Well, I have refined my stuff this weekend.

Two strips, in an X over the base, one turn of tape, and seated in a half resized case.
Jugomatic! Actually it was a piece of plate steel a little larger than a jug, about 1'X1', but i am very encouraged, to say the least.

Hornhead, you so much as TOUCH my Stetson at Grist lake, and I will be teachin' ya how ta run zig -zag like!

Enjoy the punisher er- Sharps!
