Hello all, my first post as a new member concerns an 1899 thats's been sitting in a local gunshop for months.
It's a model 1899 (no suffix letter) in 22 high power. Blueing is very well worn, wood is used but not abused. The underside of the forearm has a button/switch that resembles a tang safety. Does this indicate a takedown model? Serial number is 1236xx. The rifle is on consignment, is the asking price of $999.99 inflated or reasonable? Thanks for any thoughts.
Richard
PS What about the availability of ammo for this rifle?

Welcome Richard, inflated by over 100%. 22HP's are virtually useless as a big game rifle. And this one has no conditional merits what so ever.Hence it's still sitting in the shop.
When it comes to choosing friends....I'm at an age where I'd rather have 4 quarters than 100 pennies.

Welcome Richard. As an owner of a 1899H HP22, I agree with Jed. As a varmint (you know, squirrel, rabbit, maybe small deer) it's a great little rifle. Fun to shoot. you can get ammo here: http://www.natchezss.com/ammo.cfm?c...amp;CFID=572108&CFTOKEN=50537754I also have before and after pics of mine here: http://www.olscool.com/my99/hp22_facelift!.htmI paid $100.00 for it and refinished it. Some consider that a sin, but it was in poor shape. These guys here are EXTREMELY knowledgable AND entertaining. Again, Welcome! Blitz

Thanks for the replies, I do appreciate them. It looks like I will be buying a 99A in .243 at the same store. Easier on the pocketbook. I once lurked on this forum when it was at gunsandknives. Took me awhile to get back here. I know there is a wealth of information here, and I will be buying Murphy's book. Blitz, that's the kind of investment I'm talking about. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> Thanks for posting the pics.
