A freind of mine fell into a Colt 38 Super that appears to be unfired and original in all respects. What does he have? What is the serial number???? If what I am seeing is correct "77" that gun could be worth over $5K. That would be 1929 first week of production...

At the very least, it looks to be a pre-series 70 model, in really good shape. Worth some bucks even if the serial number doesn't turn out as good as these guys expect. Get it appraised and don't sell it to the first guy who appraises it!

You have the best of the best but IMO it will headspace on the semi-rim and not on the case mouth. The means accuracy is not going to be good. I have been throught his too.

ElkHunter...you have the lowest serial numbered gun I have ever seen on a Super, and I have studied Supers since the 1970s. My friend has serial #1000 and he would never part with it.
Don't know what your friend plans to do with the gun but I would have it appraised by someone who specializes in 1911s. An auction company could probably get the most money for the gun...and if it is truely unfired it will bring big bucks...
So where has this gun been sitting for the last 80 years???
If you can get hold of a copy of the book "Colt's Super .38 The Production History" it will tell you all about the gun. the author is Douglas Sheldon and if you can get in contact with him he can probably give you an idea of what the gun is worth...

If indeed it is SN 77 the below prices are LOW. SN 77 was indeed made in 1929 and in mint condition would probably bring 5 figures at auction.

My Dad often dealt in high-end firearms. He always said rare firearms are a marketing problem. How do you find the one buyer in 10,000 willing to part with the cash? In those days, Dad relied on the ol' boy network - get the word out and eventually the buyer would come to you. Dad never had the internet gun auction/sale sites. Nowadays a buyer can be located anywhere in the world. I can't imagine what that 1911 would bring. If I were going to sell the pistol I'd talk to Randy Bessler - Collector Firearms. He once had a serial number '1' .38 Super priced at around $30,000.

Holy chitt!!! Keith, tell him you have a friend who has a Mark Morris Custom 1911 in .45 ACP I'll trade straight across... I'm sure he doesn't want that silly little 38 Super, and my MMC is a tack-driver in a serious caliber...

The round was advertised to LE that due to its FMJ bullet at almost 1300 fps it did a great job on penetrating car bodies and the ceramic body armor badguys were using at the time that .38s and .45s would not penetrate. There were a lot of Texas Rangers who used Supers. I visited the Texas ranger Hall of fame in Waco a few years ago and took pictures of many of the Supers on display. FYI Serial #50 (1949) Colt Commander .38 Super is on auction at GunBroker.com $2K and reserve not met... Bob
