what do people know about 6.5 whisper? what bullets are you running, what twists, what vel, what type of actions, potential parent cases for other subsonic 6.5's etc

I too have wondered about ballistics, etc.

You might try,

http://specialtypistols.infopop.cc/eve

Go to the 'specialty pistol forum' on the 2nd

Ask around there and you might find some answers, worth a shot.

Good luck.

In truth its a toy compared to the 30 whisper,338W...etc.. Less bullets to choose from, less energy arriving at the target, less effective range. You'd be better off chambering for 30 Lug or 30 Tok or even 30 carbine and throating them long enough to use rifle bullets.

if "energy arriving at the target" is a consideration at all, then ANY of the whisper cartidges is the wrong answer. and 6.5's have plenty enough bullet selection for something like that. 6.5-284, 264 win mag, 6.5-06, 6.5x55 have all won their fair share of long range matches, so even hinting that there are not bullets suited to this cartridge is preposterous. if i wanted lots of energy, i would shoot the .35-375 Ruger and 280 A-frames and call it good, the whole point is to make it a "toy"

general goal is around 1/2 moa accuracy, with little to no recoil, and as little noise as possible. something just to fool around with. wont be killing anything bigger than groundhogs with it EVER. .22 lr is cool and everything, but it just isnt the same as a subsonic, match bullet launching, centerfire.

I'd be wondering about the ability to have subsonic loads there easily? I mean I"d rather take a 240gr subsonic than a 140...

Just my take on it.

Now that you mention small game only, I could see the heavy 6.5 what a 180gn might work out.

35, how far do you plan to shoot? Was thinking about a high BC 6mm based on your intended victims ...I mean game hunted wink

If you are using a suppressor that's one thing, if not, a simple 221 FB w/40s atop Lil Gun at 3600 is relatively quiet and uneventful in firing, and deadly. Very accurate, minimal recoil and noise. The say 300 Whisper has been said to be near equivalent of a 30/30 both using 125s in a 10" contender, yet with 1/3 recoil and much less blast, using as you know a pinch of fast burning pistol powder. Many choices I believe, but again your range is perhaps a major factor.

nothin' crazy for range maybe 200 and under. while the 221 fb is cool, and would serve the purpose quite well, that still leaves me intrigued about rainbow trajectories, and subsonic ballistics. I've got a .204 Ruger that is laser flat and stupid accurate, that rifle fills the niche too, i am more curious and just want something really Ssssllllooooowwwww. idk, maybe i'm just being an idiot here, i've got a "thing" for 6.5's too, maybe that is hindering my rationale. just curious

the 6.5/300 whisper will flatten a whitetail.
the guy who invented the whispers built his wife a 300 for everything, deer antelope etc.
Quick twist! The faster the better. And if you're loading under the sound barrier put the projectiles in backwards...yes, base out.
Dont ask me, I dont own, or shoot one. But I got to shoot an AR platform, a Contender. What a hoot. the contender was suppressed and just a thrill to blast sand stone boulders with. *pop* and a second later a fist sized chunk flew off the boulder at the bottom of the ravine 70-80 yards away
JDJones was filling my ears last time I visited his shop. Knows his stuff and I do recall the keys were fast twist, hot primers, and for accuracy over hunting bullets in backwards.

yeah, this one (300), cute little short action sako, 13" lop, 16" barrel, really tiny the photo doesn't really show its size truly.

Now we are getting somewhere. by "fast" twist, are we talking about 1 in 6? faster than that? if so exactly how fast? i am most interested in VLD's and SMK's. seating the bullet backwards makes perfect sense. the most efficient subsonic aerodynamic shape is that of a teardrop. keep the info comin. how long of a barrel is optimum for noise reduction? etc

Thanks thus far

Yup. 6 twist for the 30's, again, I have zip experience with the 6.5W but no doubt the same thinking I would guess applies from the 300
as to barrel length, I'm sure that would matter less vs. powder and where the speed of sound is at your place. Here its 930ish, my bud on the coast mentioned its 725fps
I'd think gray beards website, or the contender forum here will be loaded with info, contender shooters are fond of the round for silhouette
270REN another one to look at if you go contender
