For me it would depend on the environment and the potential for long shots. I practice a lot of LR shooting and would go with the 300 for that reason. If it was going to be mostly a timber hunt for the elk, I would not care one way or the other.

That being said, I have killed substantially more elk with a .270.

with a pellet gun you could double tap, hell you could even triple or quadrupal tap. You could tap as many times as you can pull the trigger and stay on target. That would essentually turn the pellet gun into a 300 win mag right?

Coming from you calling someone a troll doesn't mean much.

I would use the 270. Might load up 180 gr. for the elk if you thought 150 or 160 was lite.

Hi there, in response to heavywalker's statement about people calling each other trolls. Tom 264 and brooksrange like going back and forth calling each other trolls. I see it all the time on different forums and laugh at both of them. I'd go with the 300 only because I dispise the 270. Yes I'm a 30-06 lover no denying that.

I would go with the 30 caliber. For you everyday setup and for mid-sized game, you could shoot a 150 grain pill. when you are headed for something a bit larger such as elk, you could jump to a 180 grainer.

In fact, I really like the 300 WSM, but I could replace my 7mm WSM and 325 WSM with one rifle.

270 is all you need for elk in my experience unless you want to shoot from very bad angles, even then it may work, haven't tried that.

If I could only take one, .300 it would be. I'm bad about taking 2 rifles and alternating.

I'd encourage you to use the one that you're most comfy with and that will most likely be the 2.70. It'll be lighter and easier to carry and will bounce you around a bit less during practice.

One last thing, I'd forget the nonsense of taking a 130 for this and a 150 for that. Pick one bullet and stick with it and go forth and fill up an ark with it.

I agree completely with Mark, and either cartridge will work fine for the task at hand. For me, it would depend a lot on the terrain I would be hunting, the expected shooting distances, the odds of needing to shoot in gusty crosswinds, etc... for me, this would probably lead me towards the .300 mag.

A .270 Win. with 150 gr. Partitions at about 2930 fps. No need for more than 1 load. I've never had a need for a .30 cal. anything but I'm admittedly a .270 slut.
