What is a ball park cost for re-crowning a barrel? Is it hard to do or can any decent gunsmith handle the job?

The gunsmith I went to last time charged me $40 or $50, I forget just exactly how much, to put on what I think of as a spot face. I think some call it a target crown. A rounded one might cost more.

I chucked a large slotted brass roundhead screw into a drill, added some lapping compound, and turned my old .30-30 Savage from a 4"-at-100M rifle to a .5" at 50M tackdriver.
Shoots 1.2"-1.6" all day at 100M with several different handloads.
Took about 30 minutes to chop 3" off the barrel, true it up and crown it. Not bad for an amateur!
Cheers,
Jonesey

Hi Jonesy, I do not think I have what it takes to cut a barrel and square it. Was cutting the barrel necessary to re crown? On the round head brass screw, was it slotted or phillips? How did you keep it square to the bore. All I have is hand drill and vise, I do not think I could ever get it true.

Hey 4pwr--
Sorry it took so long to get back here.
I used a ******* file, a square, and a hacksaw to square the muzzle. Works well if you are patient, and, if not, just have your local smith lop it off, or loan you a jig.
The round-head, slotted screw will index the same from most any angle, just keep it somewhat straight. It removes metal very slowly, so just keep checking the progress with a loupe or mag. glass, to make sure you aren't cutting more from one side than the other.
Just true up the threads on that screw so it spins straight in the drill, and you are all set. Clamp the rifle into a vise, with the barrel wrapped in thick leather, and go to town. A few turns of packaging tape near the muzzle will give you the proper set to use the square on the tapered barrels. When yo no longer see daylight under it, from any angle, bust out the abrasives and finish it up!
And if it doesn't shoot at first, all you are out is a bit of cold blue, because you can re-clamp it and file a bit more. I have never needed to, however.
Good luck,
Jonesey
