My Swed mauser needs a scope...I want to drill and tap for luepold bases and modify the bolt handle.
I talked to a local gunsmith and he said he doesnt weld a new handle on , He bends and forms the one on there. Seems to me heli arc welding a new handle on would be better.
What is the best way to modify the handle. Does the reciever need to be notched for the new handle.
Any help and gunsmith recommendations would be appreciated .

Thanks Rick

Rick, the best thing to do would be to look at his work. If you like the looks of his bent handles, try him out. I've had a couple handles bent in that manner on different rifles, and they all came out looking great and worked just fine. I think most gunsmiths don't like to weld on the bolt body unless it is absolutely necessary, due to problems with heat treating, among other things.
The receiver shouldn't need to be notched for the bolt handle if he does the handle right, but the stock will probably need a notch for the handle to rest in.
I think I'd be more concerned about having the action drilled and tapped for the scope mounts. Some of these old receivers were so darned hard that some 'smiths hate to work on them. If he seems confident of doing a good job, he can probably handle it.
D&T and bolt handle bending is pretty much bread-and-butter work for most good gunsmiths.- Sheister

Shiester, Ill have to look at his work. This is my first old mauser sporterize job.
I assumed the bolt would be heated up to bend and shape just like a horse shoe,so I thought there would be more heat treat damage than heliarcing with wet rags on the bolt.
The Smith I talked to wanted $25 pure hole for D&T, $100 for 2 piece luepold bases. He recomended 1 piece base and three holes $75 .I kind of like 2 piece but welcome opinions. He quoted $100 to bend/form the handle. Are these prices resonable? My gun store that recomended him said He was high priced but did good work.
I have a FN belgium mauser in 270 from the 1950's that I am comparing to, with the notch in the reciever and handle style.
Rick

GSP, wow those prices seem awful high to me. My gunsmith charges $8 per hole for D&T and about $50-$75 to bend a handle, including the finish grinding/polishing.
There is a guy named J. Belk on huntamerica.com (on the gunsmithing forum)that is in your neck of the woods that has a reputation of doing good work, you might want to e-mail him and see what he says. Actually, several smiths from Idaho are on that site and all of them have been extremely helpful. Give them a try. Let us know how it comes out.- Sheister

DSP, you'd better look around for someone cheaper. Those prices are rediculous.

Thanks John White, I shop around,I called another local gunsmith ,He said $80. for the hole job, D&T ,mount the bases, Reform the bolt handle using a heat sink ,no heat treat weakness problems, notch reciever if nessesary, notch stock ,install safty if I buy it.
Dont know what planet that other smith was from...
Shiester
Thanks for the refer on J Belk ,I had E- mailed Him before ,haven't got a reply back.I heard some guys won't modify collector swed mausers. If that is what I have...?Im wondering if this m-38 swed is like a 1931 model A ford coupe thats been stored in a Garage for 70 years...Would not want to put a 454 chevy motor in it for fear Id devalue it...
