.300 would make a real mess out of a pronghorn. 270 works fine for all, if you can shoot. If you can't hit em where you want to, stay on the porch.

Since you threw in elk I'd go with the .300..............547.

The 300 for me and it will not make a mess out of the speed goat either. Not with the X's.

Because your question indicated deer and pronghorn with the "possibility" for elk, I'd still go with the 270. Go with a high b.c. bullet for the deer sized game and step up to a premium 150gr for the elk.
However I believe the 300WM would be "better" but NOT if you can't shoot it as well as the 270. Clearly the 300WM is not needed for the deer sized game.
Let us know what you decided.

where on earth are you going to hunt all 3 on the same hunt? And why would it be "the possibility of elk" it either is an elk hunt or it aint...

Depending on where you are hunting I'd say it's unlikely you are going to be out on foot for the day & see both elk & pronghorn, elk & mule deer more likely but less likely you will be hunting all 3 on the same day on the same outing away from camp.

So bring em both.

Carry the 300 while you are elk hunting & may see a mulie.

Carry the 270 when you are pronghorn hunting & may se a mulie.

And if the focus is mulies which may take you high or low, here or there... Take the one that might best suit what else you might also expect to encounter.

Or just forget about the 270 & take the 300 because if you are hunting pronghorn, mulies and elk at the same time... You are probably hunting moose, brown bear, black bear, hogs, zebras, gators, caribou, platypus & bigfeets too.

As the photo points out, Montana for one. Our seasons run concurrent (for a couple weeks anyhow).

My antelope and deer rifle is always my elk rifle, but I haven't seen how it makes any difference if it's a 300 Mag or 270.

And, NO a 300 mag doesn't "make a real mess" of antelope any more than a 270, and depending on the bullet, perhaps less.

I have hunted all three in Wy. With a .300 and with a 7RM. With a proper bullet, ie 200gr NP, the .300 doesn't make a mess of a goat. In fact, I doubt the wound channel looks too much different than a .270.

A nice 150g Nosler scooting out of a 270 at close to 3000 fps will drop any elk in existence as long as you hit him right. That includes quartering shots, broadside and frontal, plenty of expansion and penetration. I don't take "Texas Heart Shots" I will shoot them in the back of the neck on the run though ... The 150g Nosler will open up nicely on deer and antelope too ...

I have to agree with colorado's statement about the 270. It'll kill elk efficiently with a 150gr. Partition. I like lightweight rifles for western hunting. There's a lot more lightweight 270's than 300's.

Well I would take the 270, light rifle can be made. I was never much of a 300 Win Mag Fan, I shot a 300 Weatherby for a time. Now If I need more I just shoot a 338 Winnie. Some good 130 gr bullets in the 270 would be all you would need. Some 270's I have had shot 130's better than the 140's never bothered with 150 gr bullets in the 270 since the 130's did fine to better than fine, for me. There are just a bunch of very good bullets now a days, Its become such a moot point, I don't even know why I even posted on this one other than is a Wet rainy Saturday and I am bored. 270 280 30-06 they all pretty much do the job, and you would have a hard time telling the difference in the field. Same goes for 7mm RM , 300's and 338's on the game mentioned. Bigger stuff maybe then again maybe only on the internet.

Boy, I wish I had your problem! I'd go .270 as well and stick to the 140gr Accubond for it all.

A 7 mag, splitting the bullet weight and ballistics of both, maybe even gun weight if its short mag; start off with a 140 TSX, then a 175 Party, then a 162 A-Max.

Cause some people just make this schit harder than it needs to be!
